Waiting on a Miracle
The Radio
Was hoping for a miracle on the radio this week. Thought I saw the possibility of one coming.
When Dave said he was scrapping the present design, I examined again my
dream of SDR (Software Defined Radio). SDR has been the dream of a lot
of people for a long time.
The basic concept is this: Radios today are not generally made up of
tubes. Instead they often have in them many digital components. The
digital components perform functions of specific digital logic. That
logic could be performed in a computer program. As the computers have
grown more and more in power the whole concept seemed more and more
reasonable.
There are some functions that a digital computer can't do, or do well,
because they are analog functions. These are such things as
receiving/tuning the analogue signal received over the antenna or
providing the power/wattage that goes out over the antenna.
Nevertheless, once the signal is captured, and converted by an
analog/digital converter, there is lots that a computer can do with it
in software.
In the olden days, when I started into computers there was still lots of
debate about the relative advantages of digital versus analog computers
but as the result of the digital revolution and the micro
miniaturization of components there really is not much out there today
in the way of general analogue computers. This may all change again as
the new field of quantum computing develops, but that is a ways off and
too early to predict.
So, today, to do anything in SDR one has to develop a hybrid system.
Some of the analog functions have to be done in specialized hardware for
whatever you are trying to do. Still and all, it would seem that the
more functions one could pass off to the computer the less expensive
would be the hardware they had to build.

In effect, this is what we do with our PSK31 User Interface program. All
of its functions could actually be done in hardware or digital chips
right in the radio box - and there are such systems. But the dream is to
move more in the other direction.
There are a number of organizations out there trying to do just that.
Some of them make their software and development programs public domain.
After days of intensive effort and guidance from some very helpful
people I thought I had found the solution. A lead was provided to me to a
professor at the United States Naval Academy who has an Electrical
Engineering student who, as his major project, is developing a SDR
transceiver to process PSK31.
The professor was very kind and told me that they were going to make the
project public domain and that we were welcome to it. But
disappointment. The government spends millions on its projects and the
hardware that was going to be used for this one was way beyond our
budget.
For awhile that looked like the potential miracle that I told you about
last time, for which I felt there was an inkling. If it had worked out
like I had dreamed then it would have been worth all the delaying paths
we have gone down in the last couple of years.
We just don't know God's will. I am sure it is for good whether or not
our efforts fit into it. If they don't - then we certainly don't want to
succeed. Nevertheless, it seems we are supposed to keep trying. I tell
Dave it is like we are "Waiting For Godot". That is a very famous stage
play about a couple of guys who are in a perpetual wait loop. Sort of a
pre-"Groundhog Day". I do hope we will see through this.
Anyway, back to the drawing board. Dave had felt that there might be a
solution in using DSP (Digital Signal Processing) devices. Once again I
made an intensive search and identified various categories and classes
of these devices, trimming the tree to what might be appropriate for us.
However, doing the programming for them isn't Dave's thing. Unless
someone of you on the newsletter has this unique skill, and is willing
to help, I am going to have to search for that talent.
So, that is where we stand at the moment. There is still another SDR
alternative being examined, but mainly at the moment I am trying to find
someone with RF DSP talent.
Other Activity At Ark Two
As usual, many projects on the go. Put the book writing aside for a week
although excellent consultation about it with three delightful visitors
who came this week, one from Michigan and another from Kansas.
I hope there is someone coming today to help with worrying the worms.
Some excellent editing this week by Aaron Jean and others on the radio
manual but still more to be done before I put up the revisions.
Yesterday, completed the voiceovers for the first YouTube about the
radio, but since there are three in that series we may be a few more
weeks getting it up.
Expecting another crew in about a week to help further about getting in the wood.
Lots needs to be done on the shelter but all in God's due time. Still
greatly needing suggestions for the book cover and I am needing a LOT
more critique on the book. Certainly no reason around here to become
bored.
Another Miracle Needed
Well, the Zimmerman trial is over and here are some black statistics on death. (Double entendre intended).
Nothing in American claims more lives than abortion, with some 1.2 million children being killed each year.
The African-American community bears a disproportionate number of these
abortions. Although blacks make up 13% of the US population, black women
have some 36% of the abortions. A Black baby is 5 times more likely to
be killed in the womb than a White Baby.
Some 1,784 African-American children are killed by abortion each day.
Abortion in the African-American community has killed more than has
AIDS, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and violent crime combined.
For every two African American women that get pregnant one will choose to abort.
Some 3,446 Blacks were lynched in the U.S. between 1882 and 1968, That number is surpassed in less than 3 days by abortion.
Every week more African-Americans are killed by abortion than all people killed in the Viet Nam war
Since 1973, abortion has wiped out over 25% of the African-American population.

A 2007 special report released by the Bureau of Justice Statistics,
reveals that approximately 8,000 - and, in certain years, as many as
9,000 African Americans are murdered annually in the United States. This
chilling figure is accompanied by another equally sobering fact, that
93% of these murders are in fact perpetrated by other blacks. The
analysis, supported by FBI records, finds that in 2005 alone, for
example, African Americans accounted for 49% of all homicide victims in
the US - again, almost exclusively at the hands of other African
Americans.
A week without riots would be wonderful.
The show trial would then have been worth it.
At this hour also watching the Russian activity around Syria. More
miracles are a must everywhere.
So many things going on that it is impossible to tell what is going to
have a great impact. It could be the financial markets tied to Japan,
the disruptions in Egypt, Syria, Afghanistan or any one of a dozen
places. For the last year it has been Iran, North Korea, or someone else
in the news but the world still just rocks on. Most everyone agrees
something dramatic will happen eventually, but we just can't say when.

Greetings SAFE Team!
Ya ever had one of those weeks? Well, we just had one here! Anyway, I
still need to connect with our Database Mgrs. to see where we are in
terms of getting State Team Leaders (STLs) a copy of their membership
lists from our new Excel file.

Next step, I'd like to get as many states as possible to set up a Yahoo
User Group (or anything comparable) so that state members can view
threads and posts, without getting swamped with emails. It's also a
great alternative communication system - easy and cheap! It's a great
way for state members to meet each other and build their
Triads/community on their own initiative.
The unofficial SAFE Data Sheet (for emergency water) is still being
worked on. Once that's finished, we'll find a way to post/share it with
the STLs for input before linking it to the website. I'm sure you'll
agree that once you see this, it will generate lots of other extremely
helpful ideas.
On another topic, the contractors have been at the house this week. One
saw my water storage: "Hey, what's that for?" Another one saw my battery
array: "Hey, why do you need all that?" Then, another one saw that I
had some spare building supplies: "Hey, can I buy some of that?" In each
case, I was quickly able to state that "I don't trust the system to
take care of me. I can't afford to run out of water, have my food in the
freezer spoil, or not be able to repair my house after an earthquake,
especially when the stores are closed and the roads aren't safe!" They
were surprised, but also impressed with how easy it was to prep with so
little effort! Those discussions planted some very important seeds, and
those relationships are reciprocal since it's all about the community.
