History Repeats
Or at least rhymes
Watched a series of videos this week. Told Jean to not bother. Not
really for old folks like us, but I want my grandchildren to watch it,
so I did it.
Better suited to teenagers. Guy talks a mile a minute. Scenes flip
faster than my one eyeball can keep up with them. Reference to such
things as current music idols - that I probably miss. Some kinds of
current teen talk that I don't like - but it covers the whole of
history and there were lots of things that I learned. Some of which for
me were quite thought provoking.
It is called Crash Course on the History of Agriculture. Crash Course
has 150 videos -
on subjects like chemistry, biology and literature - but I haven't
watched most of those -
and don't plan to, but the history videos are eleven (11) minutes long
and there are 42 of them. Here it is - if you want to do them.
Crash Course
The reason that I am so interested in this overview is not so much as
just knowing the past but rather understanding the principles that will
affect the future. Some concepts that I garnered were:
1. Agriculture comes first - and that is the reason for the name of the series. Agriculture depends upon:
2. Trade and commerce are an important second. These depend upon:
a. Tradeable products
b. Trade routes
3. Security. Many factors enter in.
a. Commitment of your troops.
b. Experience of your troops.
c. Number of your troops.
d. Supplies for your troops.
e. Technology.
f. Leadership.
4. A workable monetary system.
5. A committed citizenry that believes it is in a just system.
6. Equitable treatment of Imperial subjects.
|
Societies seemed to collapse when:
A. Population exceeded resources (rather rarely).
B. Imperial organizations clashed with other imperial organizations.
One historian says that 11 out of 15 cases war occurred where imperialistic systems clashed.
C. There was a monetary collapse.
I found the latter particularly interesting - especially given my
interest in the hundred year anniversary on July 28th of 2014 of the
beginning of the First World War. It turns out that July 28th, 1914
was exactly one month to the day after the assassination that is
attributed to having started WW1. On the other hand - July 28th, 1914 is
exactly one day after the collapse of the financial markets on July
27th, 1914.
Lots of talk about the financial markets these days, but I am not going
to go there. Predictions that I have made down through the years have
turned out to be invariably wrong. For the last several years I have
heard repeatedly from others - in two months, in the Spring, in the
Fall, and then it moves forward into the next year.
The same has been true about the conflict with Iran. Or the crisis in
the American black ghettos. I receive great numbers of emails about
imminent concerns about Martial Law, UN troops in the US, various
intrigues and plots, and while none of the latter concern me no more
than the supposed coming asteroid collision or encounter with Planet X,
still my concerns over the years seem to have had equally little
relevance. Never mind. It is just my nature. I too just put it off
another year into the future. Now next July, or more properly stated,
not until after next July.
Growing older if not wiser
Jean and my Octogenarian driving exams scheduled for in October. Took a
trial written test on the Internet this week - and flunked it. So we
have to keep studying. We sure need to be able to keep driving.
Crew came to help with the wood - but didn't work out. Individual was
from a different culture. They were wanting to do videoing, but I
insisted we move the wood first. They insisted on afterwards. Been there
and done that, so I knew better. Anyway they left. Still need to get
the rest of the load off the driveway so that a new load can come before
we get into winter prices.
Fellow supposed to come clean the chimney on Saturday. He and another
fellow last year, but the the other young fellow died. We do see change.
The Birds and the Bees
Others in reply to my newsletter last week, report an abundance of
insects, birds, and even bees in their areas. May be a local thing. May
be a seasonal thing. But I don't think so. When I was a boy we used to
have to put bug screens in front of the radiator on the car. Otherwise
the bugs filled up the fins and the car overheated. Today, people don't
even know about that. Used to be just a few years ago where we filled
the car with gas they had a bucket out there with a special squeegee to
take the bugs off the windows. Gone. The special squeegee I mean. Not
needed.
Turns out that 21 of our 22 hives collapsed. All 22 have now been
reseeded. Hope that they will catch. Maybe come fall the birds and bees
will come back. I hope.
Times are good. Relatively speaking. I am thinking that anyway or we
could find someone interested in coming to live with us. Ran the
following ad on several different lists:
Village bungalow with 12 acres adjacent to village
22 beehives (recovering from colony collapse this year)
worm-farm in house
retired service dog
cat
lots of land for organic gardening
greenhouse
vegetarians
octogenarians hope to re-pass driving test in October
heat with wood only - need someone to tend stove
preppers
two streams and two waterfalls
high-speed Internet
free room and board - contribution to groceries welcome
need help with cooking / dishes / cleaning (we don't do much of that)
very cluttered
piano - but needs tuning
no cable or satellite available
very quiet village - no stores or churches
90 miles NW of Toronto - $10 GoBus from Orangeville to Toronto
non-drinkers / non-drugs
coffee - tea
lots of intellectual activity
must be tolerant of other religions
any race or religion acceptable / welcomed
we are non-political
Radio
I haven't bugged the engineer about the radio this week. Can't see that
is going any place. Everyone tells me that I have done wrong. Wasted a
lot of effort and that it should be done differently. But actually I
have gone down every path. Several people have suggested Softrock radio
but the engineer examined the specs and said we would be in the same
situation that we are now, if we went with that.
Lots of different suggestions from lots of folks but they don't actually
understand our parameters. Lots of misconceptions about what we need.
Peace and love,
Bruce

Greetings SAFE Team!
After receiving another great email from one of our STLs (State Team
Leaders), I've decided to briefly address the topic in this
article. So, what type of collapse, catastrophe, or service interruption
are you prepared/preparing for? I think the consensus is that
you should seriously consider your location and its' track record first.
Prioritize and proceed from there.

A related question is how many of us are spreading our resources too
thinly by trying to cover too many scenarios. Fear and or frustration
kick in at that point. What's the best approach or solution? It's quite
simple - Triads! You can overcome just about anything by building your
community network! There's just no way that anyone can have enough time
AND money for everything you and your family might need for what lays
ahead.
That's where SAFE comes in! Coordinating, facilitating, and providing
the necessary "tool kit" for any community to develop healthy
self-activated networks for vastly improving your outcomes for success. I
keep saying this because it's a fact: SAFE is literally on the verge of
breaking into new networking territory. We need more states to
establish some type of "User Group" (Yahoo for example) to be ready for
the fast approaching time when each STL will receive their respective
membership lists to unify us in our respective states/communities.
Once we can get ya'll in touch with each other - just watch how SAFE will take off!
