Serious Problem

Mastermind Group:

But first before I get to the problem - let me explain about something that I mention in the discussion and that is about our Mastermind Group, something that most of you have not heard about before.

A Mastermind Group is an idea developed by Andrew Carnegie in the early 1900s which became very popular in the 1930s when promoted by Napoleon Hill.

The Group is not necessarily composed of people with superior mental skills. The Mastermind itself is the Overall Divine Mind to which we are all subject - and to which the group tries to attune itself for guidance. Not all our group is religiously inclined. Some are members of various religions and others are not - but that makes no difference, as that still remains the principle.

Mastermind groups are kept relatively small so there is opportunity for everyone to give their input. There are less than twenty individuals in ours. They were chosen because of previous insights into our activities and the roles they presently play there.

While I have sent the following information to the Mastermind Group I am also sending it to the readership as a whole so that everyone will know what is going on and in the hopes that someone will have a suggestion.

The problem:

Dave, the radio engineer, spent an intense weekend on working on the prototype this weekend and says that he is giving up. He has been struggling with it for many weeks. The description of the problem is in my letter to Dave - reprinted below.

Dave's business is rebuilding radio transmitters and now having had the experience with this one he says that he thinks he could start over and design one in a week's time that would outperform the original design specs that we have. Whether or not he can actually find the time to do that - is another matter.

Good morning, Dave

Trying to think through this further. Hold up a moment on shipping it back - until I can consult with some others.

It may be that there is someone else in the states who would be willing to give it a try. We know the layout needs to be changed - but we have to do that anyway - to get two boards so that it will fit in the case.

Bob has felt that the amplifier circuit needed to be more separated from the exciter - because it was causing RF interference, but he didn't know as that would be a full solution.

The instability of the exciter circuit - was somewhat surprising - since we are expecting output from it at a fraction of its original design level.

Admittedly, it never lived up to its original 10w design level - but the 3.5 watts that the original circuit performed at was still way more than the 1.5 that we think would be adequate.

Dave Benson, the board manufacturer of the original kit recognized many people had tuning problems - but we thought this would be resolved in the manufacturing process.

Benson declined to sell us his existing inventory or the board layout masters. In retrospect I have begun to suspect that this was because there were even greater problems than being reported.

Still, hundreds of kits were in use by satisfied users and received rave reviews, over a very long time.

Over two years ago Benson decided to do a redesign. In correspondence from him three weeks ago - I could detect no progress - although in that respect he has been quite uncommunicative.

Nevertheless, that is one path we might consider - in asking if he would be willing to partner in what we are doing. From past experience there - I give that an almost zero chance.

Skip Teller, the original designer of the exciter circuit, seems to me to be more than semi-retired - and while I don't think he would be willing to take on the project - he might have some other suggestions.

But, I digress in trying to think of solutions - when I am actually at this point trying to define the problem.

Dave, you earlier sent a list of recommendations/modifications/improvements to the circuit. I am wondering if you developed further suggested changes? Could you please send a list, if you have, and also an analysis of the problems as they stand.

I recognize/acknowledge that you think that the overall initial exciter circuit was inadequate because:

a. There would be frequency differences between units due to the differences in the manufacture of the NTSC crystal.

b. That the frequency spectrum of the unit was not sufficiently broad.

These were factors that existed in the original design and were such that I felt they were within the parameters of our purpose. There are always limitations and compromises involved - in any design.

The circuit instability was an unexpected factor - and any input that you can give as to what is causing this - and other problems that you have identified would be greatly appreciated.

One thought that I have is to announce the problem on the newsletter - and see if anyone else has a suggestion. I would have preferred to have requested consultation first - from our Mastermind group - but the Newsletter is already past due putting out.

Anyway, your further analysis of the problems with the circuit and board - will be most appreciated.

Please hold up a day or two in sending it back - in case we determine it should be sent on elsewhere in the states.

Other news:

There has been a decision that there should be a change in the content of this newsletter.

I will no longer discuss national or International news because you have other sources for that. We will simply focus on content specific to SAFE, although I will also continue with personal content because I don't want the newsletter to become impersonal.

Wendy has gotten the US National raw data base working perfectly and now the need is to coordinate the activity of the Eastern and Western Division database managers. More on that and other developing subjects in a future newsletter but this one is overly lengthy already.

Peace and love,
Bruce

Greetings SAFE Team,

This week, we've seen some solid steps to making administrative progress. Meanwhile, there's a lot of folks out there wondering when they'll get some sort of orders or something from their State Leaders or regional Leaders. Well, we're putting the finishing touches on our own Networking system of sorts. And I've been getting some emails with great ideas from members!

Next weekend, across America, there'll be lots of Independence Day parades, and many communities will be showing off their Emergency Response Teams. That visibility actually has the opposite effect. The community will rest assured that SOMEONE ELSE will be there and be ready to help!

We, on the other hand, have another task. PPP: prepare, practice, and proliferate! As part of that strategy, I will continue to stress the importance of creating your own personal networks. Please take my word for it, I am also working on building my network too. But mine is more "fun based" than fear based. I'm using different interests to build friendships, and then go from there.

One tip: technology is great - if it works when you need it! Take a moment to review the various reference materials you'll need in a crisis, and get a hard copy of it in a binder. County maps with highlighted routes etc.; medical; communications; practical data sheets on various "how to" projects; and of course your personal financial/legal stuff. All that will come in handy when you need it and if you need to share any of it with family, neighbors, or folks in your Triad/network.

It'll save you a heap of time and effort over trying to coach somebody when you have more important fish to fry. More on that next time.

Peace & Action,
Christopher
