Whose Laughing Now?

The Birds and the Bees

Weeks go by sometimes with my never getting out of the house - but yesterday on the road with Jean to Redickville I said, "Look at all the birds along the telephone wires." She didn't see any birds.

I said to her, "Look at all the birds along the road." She didn't see any birds.

I said to her, "Look at all the birds in the field." She didn't see any birds.

I said to her, "Look at all the birds in the sky." "I don't see any birds," she said.

"Exactly", I said.

"When we get to a service station, I shall have to stop and wash all the bugs off the windshield", I said.

"I don't see any bugs on the windshield", she replied.

"Exactly", I said.

"When we get to Collingwood, I should take the car to the car wash and get all the bird poop off it," I said.

"I don't see any bird poop on it," she said.

"Exactly", I said.

Where have all the birds, bees, and bugs gone? Thirty years ago there was a book by Rachel Carson called "Silent Spring", but today we have silent Spring and no book.

A hundred years ago Rudolf Steiner said that in a hundred years the bee colonies would collapse. The world laughed. They aren't laughing now.

In 1949 George Orwell wrote "1984". Big Brother watching our every move. Science fiction, a big laugh. Who could have imagined. He did. Now even more than he imagined. We can look at a photograph in a crowd and view time backwards. Monitor around the world. And talk about the "Department of Lies!" (errr - Truth).

Well anyway, as you breathe today's cool air you know that the 2006 film "An Inconvenient Truth", about global warming was just a political fiction, and I assure you there would be GREAT ridicule if I were to describe the way I expect the world to be 10, 50, 100 years from now.

So Onto Safer Ground

I am not going to comment about the hundred thousand Russians being called to active duty - probably as a result of Israel's latest Syria bombing. Nor that Netanyahu has stated that Israel probably cannot wait for the US to act on Iran. And people certainly don't want me to comment about anything financial like Japan.

Well, one more word about the Zimmerman thing. Looks like we dodged that bullet - until the next time - and then it is going to be worse because of it.

We got that forest fire put out before it got started. When we do that, by spotting smoke from the fire towers, and rushing to stop the blaze before it gets out of hand, then more and more underbrush builds up, until one day we can't put it out. Nature's way was many smaller burns. We wait to have one giant one we can't handle.

George was innocent. Well, if not exactly innocent, at least not guilty. A good citizen donating his time to protect his community.

The picture of Trayvon, as the 12 year old child (child is the way he was referred to in all the proceedings) was a 17 year old on drugs who had stolen jewelry and burlgar tools in his school locker. He had been studying and practicing mixed martial arts for the last year and had been in a number of confrontations. His stated preferred method was to get in the first blow for what is called ground and pound.

The "child" painted as skipping happily back from store with a bag of Skittles and a can of watermelon tea (actually components for making Lean/Drank a drug) - was the same age that I was when I was in the military. A year later I was married and a year after that a father. The government appointed prosecutor wants to charge Zimmerman with child molestation. No one would have thought of charging the government with child molestation for putting me in harm's way.

But- make no mistake about it, the most wronged one in this case was Trayvon. Wronged not by Zimmerman but by society. As I pointed out in the previous newsletter, 93% of murdered blacks are murdered by blacks and that isn't taking into consideration at all the subject of abortion.

Still not entirely the blacks' fault. In a society where even good church going whites have trouble finding a job, a black ex-con, or someone on the path to becoming a black ex-con, isn't about to find one. There are also the problems of materiality and morality in our society - but I am not going to go there.

The only reason that I am bringing up this whole subject is to tell you that the underbrush of this forest fire is going to cause a conflagration that you can't believe - next time. The anger and pent-up emotions won't be forgotten. They are just going to lie there and fester waiting for the next incidence.

No one wants to hear my phrase about the blood running in the streets from the race riots in the American cities as the weapons fall from the air launched by a foreign enemy. Nope, people didn't like Carson's "Silent Spring", Steiner's bee colony collapse, Orwell's "1984" Big Brother, or talk about global warming, and they sure don't want to hear Beach's blast from the bombshelter.

To bed at night with a cool breeze off the little waterfall. All calm and peaceful. Just the rumble of the stream. No noisey old frogs or locusts like in the years past.

Calm night - to awaken in the morning to the quiet and stillness. Was saying to my wife how noisey the birds used to be. Not that she could hear it anymore, anyway. Nope, our world is fading away. What we are leaving to you, we wouldn't want anyway. Not in the immediate future anyhow. Maybe centuries from now it will be a wonderful world, but humanity will have to work for it. It is not just going to be handed to them as some hope. Most today don't even know the problem - and they certainly don't know the cure.

Some THINK they know the problem -- and here is an exceptionally good video about geoengineering. A few things off key - but I am not sending this to you as a flaming arrow because the speaker doesn't know the real causes or the real solutions.

Not My Flaming Arrow

Making Money at McDonalds

Things are tough all over. Now if Trayvon had been really industrious and fortunate he might have gotten a job at McDonalds. This week they put out a sample budget for their employees to show them how to budget their money.

You should go through it with your young college graduate to show them how to budget their money so they won't be living at home.

McDonalds

40 hours full time at McDonalds
30 hours part time at Second Job
----------
70 hour week
Yep, Ronald says you must have two jobs to make it. Not sure how that works because around here most people can't get fulltime, because company then has to pay benefits. But even if fulltime it is usually rotating shifts. Tricky getting two companies to rotate together or in sync. Anyway -
70 hour week is six days a week -
12 hours a day (=72 hours) The two hours unpaid divided into the 12 shifts is 10 minutes per shift. You do want your young person to be a good employee and show up 10 minutes ahead of time so as to get their quills sharpened.

This means being to work by 8:00 am (7:50) and getting off at 8:00 pm each day.

Assuming that there is no travel time between jobs and one doesn't stop for anything like eating. Probably not realistic if one doesn't live in the building between their two jobs and runs from one to the other.
Now to examine the line items.

100 Savings (Forget that)
However, being a good Christian they will want to tithe so that will be $206 off the top. In our society we certainly need to support the churches.
600 Mortgage/Rent
Can't believe mortgage. Wouldn't be able to pay the taxes and interest. Must be shared accomodation. Say four people in a city apartment.
150 Car Payment
Forget that. Better ride a bicycle
100 Car/Home Insurance
Good - now we are getting somewhere. No car - no home - don't need car or home insurance. Was an interesting combination anyway. Were the people living in their car?
20 Health Insurance
Don't need any health insurance here in Canada. Probably young and healthy in the US so don't need it there either. Anyway that is probably more than they need to pay on health insurance.
0 Heating
I guess this goes along with not having a house. You sure need heating here in Canada. I guess make sure your job is in the sunny south.
100 Cable/Phone
I don't know the price of Cellphones or laptops for Internet.
40 Electric
A bargain compared to what we pay up here - but we really get ripped off for nuclear power which was going to be free.
-----------
1,260 Monthly Expenses Total
- 470 that we can take back off our monthly expenses by doing the below
----------
730 Adjusted Monthly expenses
by taking the following costs out of the McDonalds budget
      100 Other

100 We won't do any savings
        and forget tithing.

Too tired after 70 hrs. to go to church anyway.
150 And we didn't go for the car - so no car payments
and will walk or bike to work. (So no bus fare)
100 And that saved us insurance
20 and we didn't need any health insurance
----------
$470 we have to add back on so expenses are only $730 --------
2,060
- 730 Adjusted Monthly expenses our way.
----------
1,330 Monthly spending money which is

$44 a day for food.
Actually you don't have quite $44 a day to start with because the government takes regressive taxes (SALES taxes) on spending. In Canada that would have reduced you to $37 a day. But fortunately you aren't having to pay gasoline taxes.
$37 a day for food - who couldn't live on that?
Well not quite. You do need clothes also - but you can get those cheap at the church rummage sale - like we do.

Better allow something for shoes because you are going to be doing lots of walking since we didn't put in anything for transportation.

Let us say you spend $30 a month for clothes. In addition to $10 at the rummage sale that will give you $20 for new shorts and and socks. No wonder the style has been jeans with holes in them. Anyway, divided over the month - that leaves you with
$36 a day for food
Haircuts are too expensive. Beauty parlor - forget that. Dating? Nah - too tired after 70 hours a week. Take in movie on your day off. Nope - I just checked - the movie prices.

Don't buy any books or magazines. Borrow at the library. Still have -
$36 dollars a day for food.
Good thing that you don't have anything like credit card debts. If you wanted a fancier lifestyle you should have gotten a college education.

You did? And you have a student loan payment? How much? $120 a month. Well, you still have -
$32 a day for food.
What? Toothpaste? And a brush! Toilet paper? No, no, no - use the toilet at work. Hey! Hey! Stop listing the things you can spend money on. It could run up to a hundred things.

$?? a day for food.
Okay - you can see where all this is going. But, you have money for food! Yeah, unless McDonalds is letting you eat there for free - you can't afford to eat all your meals at a high class place like McDonalds.

BUT - you are so lucky! You have a job. Two no less! 80% of the black males in the ghetto can't find one.

Okay - no savings. No tithing. No car. No insurance. No money for other (we took that out of the budget) but you do have food. No wonder most Americans are overweight.

Good thing that seven Americans own as much as the bottom 40% of all Americans - or we would eat ourselves to death.

Kaiser Family Foundation and Health Research and Education Trust found that employer health insurance premiums for a single person were $9860 in 2009 but 24.5% of households with $25,000 or less income went without health insurance. Nothing about any of that which I understand.
It is all relative. Your situation is much better than being unemployed. It is much better than being employed in the slave labor shops of China or India, which is better than being unemployed there.

My whole point about all the above is that - THESE ARE THE GOOD OLD DAYS - and someday we will look back and think how fortunate we were to have what McDonalds offers.

Peace and love,
Bruce
