SAFE Ark Two Newsletter
May 5th, 2013
Intensifying Activity
I would have liked to put off writing this newsletter for a day or so to allow some things to further develop.
Victoria has an important YouTube that we have been working on for weeks - but it is not quite ready to release.
The Radio is involved in a lot of intense activity but is not at a milestone that I would like to announce.
I have been working intensely on the radio documentation but the second draft has a way to go before I can share it.
But - I can't delay.
We have a new National Coordinator - Christopher Verreos, and it is
important that I announce it through the newsletter. Not all the State
TEAM Leaders have yet responded to an email that was sent to them. It is
important that they look for that email and respond.
Charles Dark will continue as the data base manager and there is much that we need to get up to speed.
There is lots more happening next week. Dave is wrestling with key
circuitry issues in the radio. Darlene and Fred are coming next Sunday
to reconcile the remaining radio software issues.
I have obtained an Amazon consultant regarding getting Society AFTER
Doomsday into Kindle format and up onto Amazon. This may take a few
weeks to accomplish.
It is important that we start implementing the Ham Net with Carlton as
the net coordinator. There is much to be communicated about this.
Things are happening very quickly and will start piling up if we don't
keep all this moving forward so here is this newsletter, despite so much
being presently incomplete.
I will address each of these issues further down in this newsletter.

The News and Lack of News
I hope that people are not being misled by the news or rather the lack
of news because it seems to me to be entirely misleading. The
financial/economic situation in Cyprus and among the PIGS (Portugal,
Italy, Greece, Spain - and for that matter throughout Europe, Japan and
elsewhere) has very much worsened.
The false perspective is based upon the stock market being up and
treasury prices being down (considered a good thing) on what is called STRONG job data in the US.
It is more accurately STRANGE job data.
More people worked -
but EVEN MORE people worked FEWER hours.
So the end result was
there were fewer hours worked.
The equivalent of many more being unemployed
than there were before.
When we talk about the unemployment rate being lower
it simply means fewer people are able to get unemployment benefits -
it does NOT IN ANYWAY mean that fewer people are unemployed in any real sense.
We just call them discouraged workers -
rather than being unemployed.
As serious as the situation is among the general US population -
it is much more serious in Europe -
and among the ghetto populations of the US. (I discussed in a previous newsletter the expected consequences of that.)
These pocket situations will lead to social unrest.
The serious thing about the pockets is that they are more and more
becoming not 'small pockets' that is to say 'small areas' but that they are trending to become the whole cloth.
Consequences of the Current Economic Crisis
As you know, from a background of having been a social scientist,
suicide rates is one of the things that I have been tracking. Such
things as that of more US military dying in Afghanistan from suicide
than by enemy action. I see it as evidence of the current social stress.
Suicide trends are observed to be greatly increasing in Europe and
Japan, two areas under serious economic stress. I suspect this is a
trend that will continue to accelerate.
In the US, suicides among people aged 50 to 59 years old doubled in 2010 - the latest year for which we have statistics,
and I suspect that current rates are even higher, but that is something
(because of the lag in statistical gathering) that we couldn't know for
three or four years.
More than 38,000 Americans killed themselves in 2010; that's more than
double those who were killed in a homicide that same year, according to
the CDC.
Suicide rates (in the 35-64 age) group were highest among American
Indians and Alaska Natives... The next biggest increase was seen in
whites. Among American Indians and Alaska Natives, the suicide rate for
women jumped 81.4%; for men it was a 59.5% increase.
In 2009, the number of deaths from suicide in the United States
surpassed the number of deaths from motor vehicle crashes for the first
time.
Our new National Coordinator
Christopher Verreos has been a very active participant in the greater
Ark Two Community (that we call SAFE) for a considerable length of time.
I can think of no one to better take on this role. In the future I hope
that he will make contributions to this newsletter. He lives in
California and is an active prepper. I am sure that in time he will
provide details about that. Charles Dark will continue as the data base
manager, which is an essential support to the SAFE operation.
It is urgent that any State TEAM Leaders that have not checked in with
Christopher, do so now. Things are happening very quickly and we need to
be moving very quickly.
Progress on the Radio
I am very pleased about the intensity of effort that has taken place on
the radio development in the last week. Dave has reported considerable
progress in working on the second bench prototype. Below is a photograph
of the prototype (the green printed circuit board) sitting on Dave's
work bench next to his power supply.
The "2" on the board means that it is board #2 of the second version of the prototype.
Bob has number "1" and "0" which are at the same stage of functionality except for the changes made this week in "2" by Dave.
Boards "1", "2" and "3" are identical at this moment. (Except for the
changes that have already been made in board "2" by Dave.) Board "4" is
only about 95% populated. We were able to field test "0" but the second
version prototype has not yet been made functional.
Boards five to eight will be the third generation - hopefully.
Adam has started laying it out on dual boards so it will fit in a
smaller cabinet, but waiting for Dave to debug and improve this one.
Darlene and Fred are to come on the 13th to reconcile the software.
We are closing in on finishing the radio software - but need some input from Dave.
The SAFE Ham Net
We are anxious to let Carlton start organizing the SAFE Ham Net. Mainly,
I have been reluctant to go ahead until we can finalize the software so
that some of you can test it before we start distributing it. Most of
all I will be needing people to edit the manual. For this there will be
needed both expert Hams and others who are not Hams at all. The reason
for the latter is that I wish to make sure that it is easily
comprehensible to non-Hams. If some of you wish to volunteer for this
task, it is not too early as I hope to finish the second rough draft
this week, before Darlene and Fred come.
Current Activity at Ark Two
The activity this coming week is going to be very intense with effort to
complete the radio manual, and numbers of people, including media,
expected to visit. I hope to be able to announce Victoria's important
YouTube next week but with the anticipated intensity of activity here -
including getting the National Coordinator up to speed, conversion of
the e-book, and some serious problems that have appeared regarding the
web mirrors, the next newsletter may be late getting out which is why I
had to send this one with such incomplete information.
Peace and love,
Bruce
