Unemployment should drop drastically
in January
Not that there will be more that have jobs -
in fact there may be a lot fewer.
If unemployment figures increase -
it means that a LOT more people don't have jobs.
The reason why unemployment will greatly decrease in January is because
Federal extended unemployment will end and millions receiving it will
suddenly no longer be receiving unemployment and so will according to
the rules no longer be unemployed.
This has nothing to do with the fiscal cliff, although that too can
certainly come into play. It may impact lots of other unemployment
benefits and in that climate it is certainly going to prevent a further
extension.
Automatic fiscal cliff cuts will certainly remove a lot of
strings/threads out of the social safety net. How all this is going to
affect the social climate at a time when many communities are already
cutting back on their social services and reducing their police
departments - is something yet to be seen. There is also increasing
pressure to reduce the costs and overcrowding in the prison community by
more early release of prisoners into a society that has fewer and fewer
jobs for those who want them. Anyway, who would want to hire an ex-con
when so many young capable college graduates are eager to pump gas, flip
burgers, or do whatever you want them to do.
These latter are quite trainable, although many employers do not want to
train them and would rather complain about the inability to find very
specific rare skills among the population. Training duration/employee
loyalty (we won't discuss employer loyalty) are all parameters that
factor in.

As serious as the situation is - and it is quite serious in some
neighborhoods with 70, 80, 90 percent unemployment in particular
locations - it is generally more serious in Greece and other sectors of
the EU. There unemployment among youth is at over 50%. One recommended
remedy has been to reduce unemployment benefits to give them increased
incentive to find work. We are perhaps about to test that strategy in
the US.
The social/economic costs of unemployment are immense. The only way
anything is produced, even in our automated age, requires labor.
Wasted/unused labor, like wasted/unused intellect, is something that can
never be recovered. The other great cost to unemployment is the
discouragement/disincentive that it creates in workers. The cry and
concern about the welfare society is genuine, but there needs to be
opportunity.
We have many things backwards in our society. There should be guaranteed
employment for everyone. Anyone without a job should be able to go to
the government employer of last resort. These jobs should be arduous and
somewhat undesirable so that there will be incentive to
find/prepare/qualify for something better, but this workfare is the
alternative to welfare.
The other thing we have backwards is charging for education. We should
pay people to learn. The higher their performance the more they should
receive. There would be no shortage of doctors or any other skill. Many
people ask who would pay for all this. What a limitation in people's
minds
that they don't recognize that money is simply numbers generated in a
computer and that the real cost is unemployment and ignorance.
None of this is going to change, (along with many other important
things) in our present society, and it is impossible to effect such
change through political parties. But, because of the things that need
changing, our society is about to collapse and it is at that time that
we can put back a new and better world.
I personally won't be around to see it. The new and better world that
is, but that is what SAFE/Ark Two/ and this newsletter is all about. It
may take centuries to attain but we have the privilege to be at the
birth of God's Plan for human society and the human race. To see that,
one has to get beyond the greed, materialism, selfishness, and
immorality that completely enshrouds the present day thinking of almost
all of humanity. Those who offer solutions in limited national
patriotism, failed economic theories, and dogmatic religion are as often
a part of the problem as not.
While our vision may be towards the long-term future our immediate
concerns are in the immediate offing. Something like the financial
cliff, collapse of the Euro, conflict between Israel and Iran, Pakistan
and India, North and South Korea and a plethora of other bubbling and
boiling conflicts about the world will eventually precipitate a social
collapse that will bring the world into catastrophic conflict.
Individually, we can do nothing about these either, but we must prepare
as to how they may impact our lives.
There is no need here for me to repeat my three prime recommendations.
People have either left the cities or they haven't. Most are indifferent
and some feel trapped there, but for whatever reason they will remain
and my focus has become one of what to do for people afterwards. The
great key/necessity for people afterwards will be social organization
and that is something they are oblivious to and have no idea as how to
go about reconstructing. It is something that they are not currently
interested in and so there is no way at present to communicate/educate
the information.
Most everyone reading this newsletter will know that we have prepared
"The Paper" for distribution afterwards, and many of you have hundreds
or thousands of copies plus the printing masters
which are freely downloadable and there is no telling how many printing
masters are out there or how many people have them on the thousands of
CDs that we have given away. The concern, of course, is the will and
means to activate them when the time comes.
A major project at the moment is the writing of ten novels to educate
people how the SAFE LERNs are formed and operate. It is hoped that we
will be able to achieve through an entertaining method that which we
haven't been able to achieve directly. In the aftermath our biggest tool
is planned to be the SAFE EMS radio Ham Net.
Whether any of these ambitious plans can be actually accomplished
depends upon the Grace of God. While I do not expect the climaxing event
to occur for another couple of years (and I do not have a crystal ball
about that pro or con) still we don't know what conditions will permit
us to do in the intervening time.
Nevertheless, we press on forward - and while during the last week there
have been many details concerned / consulted / confirmed by our
engineers Adam and Dave, there is no specific project landmark that I
can report regarding the hardware. Likewise the work of Darlene and
Carlton on the software. In both cases I have received updated versions
(the one for the hardware I will include here) but there is still more
to be done in both spheres.
Carlton wishes to begin collecting a roster of SAFE Ham Operators. We
hope to be able to start doing this before the end of the year when we
can provide those joining the roster with a copy of the software. I have
also begun a rough draft of the systems and operation manual. We will
let you know when and where to join the roster.
This week at Ark Two has been intense - as promise all the weeks
for December. There were of course the four media sessions this week and
Friday we received our winter wood supply. The generator repair person
didn't make it here but is supposed to come this coming Wednesday or
Friday. Medical appointments this coming Monday, and Thursday so that
fills the week. Then the cardiologist the next week, and the surgery has
been moved up to the 19th.
If it doesn't sound like I am all that busy (and you wouldn't believe
how much so) it all sounds like I am very unhealthy, but I feel
amazingly well. Am planning to cut down on the big boxes of wood that I
have been carrying, to half the size - because they do in my back. We
have a wonderful massager that Jean picked up at a rummage sale for five
dollars. I have loaned it to a couple of people but it didn't seem to
do the job for them. It has been a lifesaver for me and has kept me
going.
Today a church group of seven is planning to come and then Che bringing
his crew the next two weekends in preparation of the big work weekend on
the 22nd. Wilf coming back down from Elliot Lake for that. Anyone else
wanting to come - do let me know.

Our big pressing need is someone to volunteer to take over as US National Coordinator. Step right up!
Do enjoy this season. Things may get tougher from this point out. As you
know, I have for a long time been saying not to worry about the Maya
Calendar and that sort of thing but I do think that by the middle of
February we will be seeing things happen.
