Eleven Plans for Survival

For over half a century - after having been in the military and becoming familiar with the potential of nuclear war I have carefully thought about concepts of survival.

Plan 1:
Rely upon the government.-
Unfortunately - the government abandoned its civilian population nuclear survival plans. The government and big corporations came to realize that:
a. the cities couldn't be evacuated-
b. it was scaring the people and they might start objecting to the idea of nuclear war in defense of the imperialist/fascist/corporatacy-
c. there wasn't any way for big corporations to make money out of civilian defense like they do out of military defense companies - so civilian defense plans didn't make it through Congress and the shelters were abandoned and the supplies destroyed. The US went all sword and no shield.

Plan 2:
Living in a big city (Chicago)
I then got the concept of what is now called a BOB (Bug Out Bag). I soon realized that I wouldn't be able to get very far with traffic jams - or on foot with my wife and children under six years of age.

Plan 3: I decided that we needed a BOL (Bug Out Location).
We looked at all sorts of things. Particular buildings, caves, etc. The idea is to leave before everyone else, when you see signs of trouble. But we have had continuous signs - for years - and catastrophies happen SUDDENLY - as that is their nature.

Plan 4:
With BOB or BOL one needs supplies -
and either not knowing where one is going - or not being able to stock a remote location - there comes the idea of getting to a remote area - and learning to live off the land. One can acquire special knives, fire-starting equipment, emergency tools and devices of all sorts - and learn special skills. I did. It is a romantic idea. For those who lived in a time - when game was plentiful - and large expanses of forest were unoccupied - that way of life - (even for those who were hardened to it) was usually relatively short for members of their family.

Plan 5:
Find a suitable location.
Build a family shelter.
Equip it and hunker down. I studied into this concept. Obtained related certificates - and a general contractors license - and built shelters of numerous different designs for many different people. I came to realize that no individual family can survive alone. One male cannot stand guard twenty-four hours a day. One male cannot everytime survive every hazardous task - such as clearing vents - fixing water supply - or dozens of other things that may come up. When the protection is gone - the family is gone. Just not enough manpower - or more importantly - brainpower - in one family for it to survive such a situation. People have always survived in
groups
clans
tribes.

Plan 6:
Build a shelter with a group.
Did this twice for over 50 people each time - and have seen others try it. First time for myself was in Utah - with a Mormon group - and we had good resources such as the Mormon cannery. Still, people burn out. Some don't contribute near as much as others. There are life changes such as children growing up - having to relocate because of jobs - or families splitting up - (check American statistics on that - and compare the probability to the size of the group.) In experience - ten years has been a long time for any group to sustain itself. I have seen many dozens of groups. and most don't last anywhere near that long. That is usually especially true for those without a facility.

Plan 7:
Start an independent entity.
A corporation that owns the land and facility. Doesn't depend on an individual - their health - age - family stability - life change such as employment etc. Never tried this myself - but others around me/associated with me - and numbers of others that I have known of - did try it. I have never known it to work out. They got bogged down in by-laws - not enough people with stability of income - to contribute enough funds - differences of opinion of what the threats were - and what should be done. People with enough money to make it work - all decided to do it "their own way" - and to have their own shelter where they wanted it - completely under their control. A mistake. See plan 4. But that is the way they went.

Plan 8:
Bite the bullet.
Go ahead on one's own -
and invite other individuals to join - but if they don't - carry on. Not many can afford to go this route. But, if one can - be generous because there is strength in numbers. Having others around you - that you have association with - will greatly contribute to your survival - no matter what. Few people will contribute and hang in. Over the years - there will be burnout and departures. In my case over a dozen have died from old age - and others have simply retired and are out of it.

Plan 9:
Invite other groups to join you.
Tried this. We joined an organization called Farm Start that lists to thousands of people who want to get out in the country. Many called - but couldn't make the jump. Didn't have the resources. Needed us to pay them a salary. We offered free agricultural land - with plowing, seeds, water, fertilizer - but people wouldn't come and do their own work. We even offered to let people pick free crops we had grown. (Right now I have a field of ripe rye - that I don't know what to do with it.) But there were no takers. Probably just too far away for one thing. Over time - we did have over, maybe way over, a hundred people come - from a variety of different organizations/movements. But - people have all sorts of ideas. Fine with us - but they didn't carry through. Dozens of different concepts of agriculture. Pure organic. Etc. But they were hobbyists. No consistency - to come week after week after week. Concerts, civil demonstrations, etc. - would take priority - and the weeds took over. And while their ideas fit in with survival - other survival ideas did not fit in with them.

Plan 10:
Plan for the next generation.
Over time - over fifty years - one's situation and viewpoint changes. They realize they aren't going to live forever. Their children grow up and move away. Their priorities change. If they mature they see life on a grander scale - that it is not just about individual survival - but about society as a whole - and about the purpose of life itself. Still they carry on. Try to involve other people - try to help other people to achieve their goals - and progress through these stages of thought/activity. Pass the resources/experience/insight on to the next generation(s).

Plan 11:
A complete shift of perspective.
Recognition that the concern must not be just about survival - but about recovery and reconstruction of society afterwards. Having deeply studied/thought and intensely practiced about these things for over fifty years - I feel that I have come to some insights that many/most others haven't worked their way through to as yet.

The conclusions that I have arrived at so far (and they can certainly change further - as I hear from others and learn still more) are often conclusions 180 degrees different from what numbers of people hold - and they will think that I am entirely wrong.

Some/most people would still say - live life - don't worry about it - look at what it has gotten me in the last fifty years - and that it is the government's responsibility. Just get on with life and enjoy it - because my whole attitude is one of someone whom they feel is mentally deranged.

Others - who feel themselves quite expert on the subject - if they said anything - would say - "Keep quiet." Don't tell anyone what you are doing. Secrecy is your most important defence. You are stupid to let people know what you are doing - and you have defeated yourself from the outset - and I wouldn't want to be standing anywhere near you - when it all comes down.

Many think you need to stock enough food - for 2-5 years. I tell them it is a useless plan. You couldn't move that much - so you have to be where you store it. If you did store it - someone will come and take it away from you.

Ahhh - they will say - that is why one needs plenty of guns and bullets, and when I tell them that I don't own even one gun - they know there is no hope for me.

The ideas that I hear from others about
security
recovery
agriculture in the future
alternative energy
communication
organization
are for the most part ideas that I have come to the conclusion - that they won't work.

There are solutions for all these things - and I try to explain about them in the book Society AFTER Doomsday - but people need to examine them and study them out ahead of time.

I am continually getting/receiving from others what I feel are still further insights and new ideas about
security
agriculture
communication
and alternative energy.

Some of these I plan to discuss in my next newsletter. While they may be very different from what you have heard before - please do remember two things:

a. I have already gone through in my thinking - all those eleven plans/stages listed above - and if you are still hung up in one of them - and haven't thought through the others - please do consider/understand the other concepts.

b. I am willing still to hear new ideas and reasonable critiques of the ideas/approaches that I am presently considering.

I fully expect that events will be much different/worse than any of us can anticipate - and that none of us can be adequately prepared - or will have done all we wish that we had done.

In my next newsletter I plan to discuss some new ideas that have come to me recently about - agriculture and alternative fuel.

A reminder that a couple of weeks ago Victoria released a video for Ark Two.
