SAFE Ark Two Newsletter Special Radio Edition Part Three of Three September 21st, 2013 This special edition of the Newsletter is the third of a special three part series being devoted to the subject of the radio. The radio is very important to the SAFE Reconstruction concept. In this third and final part, of the three part series, we will examine the current equipment plan. Design of the SAFE EMS Hardware Whenever I talk to experts about the design of our system the response is: "That is very simple - surely it has been done before!" Well, "No." And why not? Well, in the first place, any full blown Ham rig will do with ease what we want to do - so Advanced Hams don't need our little device. However, Advanced Hams usually spend a couple of thousand dollars, and often ten times that, on their rigs and hobby. We want a system that will cost less than $200. New hams, that are looking for inexpensive systems don't generally want one that does what ours does because it uses a mode that is only legal for advanced hams to use. (We however, take an approach that is COMPLETELY Legal). There are a few designs that have been built by hobbyists that are pretty close to our need, but they are QRP, which means 'low power' usually 3-10 watts. We want 20w+. We thought that we could add a power amplifier to that type of unit/design but it turns out they are just too unstable to work at the higher power. A ham will reply, but what difference does it make? I have been able to talk around the world on my QRP. Yes, but unreliably. We want to talk relatively nearby - and reliably. Well, "then perhaps you need to consider a different system." We have been told that many dozens of times. And this is where we have gotten dozens of recommendations - but none of them will do the job. The most common suggestion is that everyone learn CW (Morse Code). Yeah. Repeaters, another suggestion - won't be available. CB - doesn't go far enough although some people talk about power modifications. Some have said, "Just go to an existing design, and ask them to tweak what you need." Yep, if we will give them a money up front order for tens of thousands of units. And the list goes on. It all comes down to money. Apparently the sole motivator today. So, two years later we have gone down many, many paths and are still at square one - in trying to get our design, although we do understand better now what won't work in trying to obtain the design that we want. There are many reasons why the methods and practices common to hams are not satisfactory to our needs. The equipment is too expensive, the antennas are often difficult to put up, the bands and frequencies that they often use don't meet our special purposes, the systems are often very complicated to use and modes such as CW are very difficult to learn. All of the Ham Emergency Radio Nets are designed for where there are surviving areas around a disaster area. None of them are designed for a universal catastrophe where there are no untouched areas. Consequently, most Hams, like most people, think such an idea of universal catastrophe is nuts. Each ham may argue vehemently for their favorite system, but we would not be able as easily, using parameters other than the ones we have chosen, to convert such a system to our universal calamity model and get a great number of participants to utilize our SAFE Net. The New Approach After all this time there has been suggested to us a new approach that will allow us to obtain equipment that will achieve our parameters. The new recommended approach is to use a Transverter with a CB. I had not heard of the idea when it was first suggested and had to look up what a Transverter is. Such a device changes one frequency to another. It is NOT possible for every frequency on a CB radio but it just so happens that a transverter can be designed to change CB Channel 40 to the 80m band that we wish to use. Anyone can legally buy a CB transceiver. No license is required. The transverter is neither fish nor fowl. Neither transmitter or transceiver, so anyone can also buy the transverter. The issue is marrying them together along with the amplifier. That string of CB radio, Transverter, Amplifier, with a NVIS antenna, is then connected together to a computer sound card and the computer. We will then have 80m band PSK31 at the required wattage. Legal to purchase and own, and legal to receive PSK31 by anyone, at anytime, whether a licensed ham or not, but illegal to transmit on except by an Advanced Ham, so we will disable the 80m transmitting capability in a way that a ham will have to activate it. It will also be illegal to use ham equipment during a universal catastrophe if the Presidential Executive Order is activated, but that is a bridge that will have to be crossed at that time. There are a couple of other neat things about this new design. The designer, David Cuthbert, wishes to make the CB part generic. This means that you should be able to buy any SSB CB with Channel 40 and make it work with our transverter. The CB radio will still fully work as a CB on all 40 Channels. You can spend from hundreds of dollars to a few dollars for a CB, however, we hope to try out some of the less expensive ones and if we find one that works well, so that we can standardize to that one, we may be able to get a very good price with a bulk buy. So far we look to be on course to come in under our target price of $200 for the whole system. The lower we can get the price - the more people that should participate - many with multiple units so that they can equip family members or friends that are less than three or four hundred miles away. Our system will still require an external NVIS antenna, an external 12v power supply, the sound card, computer and and computer software, and a PTT button. We are considering a couple of optional external packages such as an antenna tuner. The following is a concept diagram of the system. The necessity will remain for our participants to know how to assemble the system, activate the transmit (only in time of dire emergency), (if they are not Advanced Hams), the procedures for operating in our network and the overall functions and purposes of SAFE as explained in the Paper. This is the reason as explained, in Part Two of these Special Radio Newsletters, about the SAFE EMS Ham Net meetings that we hope to hold in your state in a location near enough for you to attend. Specifics about using the SAFE Ham Net, the User Interface, and setting up the equipment and special antenna are found in The SAFE EMS Manual More details about how the radio fits into the SAFE Plan is to be found in: "The Paper" which is also available as a pdf press master. And of course with the explanation about LERNs in the book "Society AFTER Doomsday". The CB/Transverter Designer David Cuthbert will be the lead Engineer on this new design, so allow me to introduce Dave to you. Dave retired this month and says he now has time to devote to the project. His areas of expertise lie in analog electronics. He has done power supply design from milliwatts to a megawatt, high voltage (to 70 kV) video, RF, semiconductor test, metrology, antenna design, signal integrity, and most recently (EMC) electromagnetic compatibility. He did commercial EMC at Micron for seven years (mostly at the semiconductor level) and for the past five years Military EMC at L3. Along the way he has done a constant stream of analog design and in-house test equipment. He holds 27 patents and has authored 50 articles, 30 of them on antennas. He has been an exceptional contributor to eHam, where I found him, with over 5,000 posts there. Our Alternative Approach We have a proposal for an alternative approach to developing the radio. Everyone, including Dave, agrees that this would be the better radio if it could be achieved. However, it would be considerably more expensive, require more effort to develop and the development process might be substantially longer, and could involve some legal difficulties/obstacles in its manufacture that would have to be overcome. Nevertheless, we may undertake a two prong effort. Dr. M. the designer in the UK is still evaluating the feasibility of this approach. This second part of the series will talk about the plan to set up and operate the SAFE Ham Net itself and the third and final part of the series will examine the equipment plan itself. Building the SAFE EMS Ham Network The greatest challenge facing SAFE is to build its EMS (Emergency Messaging System) Network. It is a Ham Network in only the most elemental definition. A ham network is usually one of licensed ham radio operators. Ham operators have various levels of licenses which permit them to do certain things and restrict them from others. The Best Method The SAFE EMS is based upon a method that is by law restricted to the very highest level of hams. The reason for the restriction is not because of its difficulty, because it is actually the easiest to use for the exceptional accuracy that it provides, but rather it is restricted to advanced hams because it is considered a reward for their having achieved that level. The Legal Problem When I wrote the manual for the SAFE EMS system I quoted a source that provided an interpretation of the FCC law that supported use of this ham capacity by anyone in the public in time of dire emergency. The statement and that interpretation still remains on Wikipedia, at the time of this writing, but in lengthy discussion with the individual considered the foremost authority on the subject, within the FCC, I have now learned that it is NOW interpreted differently by them, if there ever did exist the more liberal interpretation. As a side note, may I mention that it took me many hours, stretched over several days, to find a path through to this individual. There is no standard path, in reality No Actual Path, for doing so. Anyway, the present interpretation is that this extended privilege, in time of dire emergency, applies only to licensed ham operators of all levels. Two opposite forces appear at work here. Greater restriction on the one hand combined with on the other hand a substantial easing of requirements of what is required to become a ham at the lowest level, so as to be eligible to use the facility in time of dire emergency. A Newer Legal Problem However, the same authoritative individual in the FCC pointed out to me a NEW factor, and that is Executive Orders have been issued by the President of the United States stating that ALL ham activity may be forbidden in the event of such a national emergency as we are visualizing. We have demonstrated here the inconsistent contradictory paradoxical point of view expressed by the government regarding nuclear war. The Government's Plan to Protect Us On the one hand we are assured that it is nothing we need to worry ourselves about and that for this reason they have discontinued the civil defense services of training and equipping civilian radiation monitors and providing and stocking shelters. Any person suggesting such a need is ridiculed when they contact a government agency. On the other hand the government continues to build more accurate nuclear weapons and more efficient ways of delivering them, and at this moment is dispersing them more broadly and announcing new policies regarding 'first usage' - while making extensive plans for COG (Continuity of Government), stockpiling immense stores of food, equipment and ammunition for control of the civilian population, and issuing Executive Orders regarding what should be done in case of such an event. The Quandry for SAFE This does create a quandary for an organization such as SAFE. In effect we are told that we cannot prepare for an event such as we visualize and no matter if we did, if the event were to occur that we would not be allowed to use our radio facilities in any case. Legal to have the SAFE EMS Equipment Nevertheless, we have found a COMPLETELY Legal solution to the problem of preparing ahead of time. Of course any and all may go out and get the lowest level ham license. That is not a terribly difficult thing to do, but we recognize that for the number of people that we want to be equipped, it is not something that they will do. Government May Forbid Use of ALL Ham Equipment No matter whether you have the equipment, and know how to use it, there still exists the theoretical situation that in time of nuclear WW3, the US Federal Government (or other authorities) may forbid you to use it. Whether in that time of universal catastrophe they would actually have the capability to prevent such use, and what your personal response might be to such directives, in the unlikely case that you would hear them at that time, is a decision that you will have to make. The specifics regarding the hardware as to what makes it legal and as to how it will operate is a matter that we shall cover in the third and last part of this series. For now, the subject is what we have to do to organize the SAFE Net. Ham Community Support First, I wish to disabuse a common notion among preppers that we can rely upon the ham community. It is an exceptional individual who is a prepper and a ham. More likely a prepper who has become a ham, than a ham that has become a prepper. In talking with several ham clubs, the representatives of probably fifty companies that manufacture or distribute ham equipment, the aforementioned government agencies, and a variety of other sources, I found not one individual who was sympathetic to our cause, while encountering numbers who were adamantly opposed. Two recent examples: One individual who had a circuit that we were interested in told me frankly that he thought our cause was completely 'nuts' and did not want me to contact him again, and just yesterday when I posted a request on one of the largest and best known ham boards, for other hams to join us, it was removed without explanation, something that other members of the board said that they had never seen happen before, and in my requesting an explanation from the coordinator of the board, as to the reason why - I did not even receive a response. The preppers that are hams come to us from our own organization or other prepper organizations. We can expect nothing from the ham community. In fact there is often vocal opposition to the effect that we are muddying up their hobby. All the above was in explanation of why we are planning to do what we are planning to do in the way that we are planning to do it. Nature of the SAFE EMS Ham Network The nature of our radio system is that it is designed to give reliable coverage within three to four hundred miles. That is a circle six or seven hundred miles in diameter. Still a large area but not the kind of intercontinental skip that hams like to brag about. Because of the limited size of the communication circle we need to group our communications nodes around state organizations. Therefore, it is necessary that Christopher, our US National Coordinator, strengthen our state organizations so that each one has a strong State TEAM Leader and two active assistants. One of these assistants may be the ham coordinator for that state. All the ham coordinators will also work with Carlton, who is the SAFE US National Ham Coordinator. For the SAFE EMS to work, we need many SAFE hams (not necessarily licensed hams) in each state. If there were only 50 in each state, that would still be 2500. This is our greatest problem, finding that many preppers that are interested and willing to participate. We face a two-fold paradox. First, that not that many people are interested in these relatively quiet times and second, that if times become more intense due to circumstances in the economy, or whatever, this may not permit them to achieve their (and our) goals. For the moment we shall ignore the paradox and continue to try to build and strengthen the state organizations. Assuming that we are successful, and that circumstances permit, we hope to organize meetings in each state, where the participants will learn to assemble and operate their equipment. More details about that in the third and last part of this series. The Planned SAFE EMS Ham Network Meetings But, more particularly, it is our intention that at these meetings the participants will learn the Net operating procedures, will set up TRIADs and learn the procedures for setting up LERNs after some universal catastrophe. Having copies of "The Paper" which is available as a pdf press master or having read and understood about LERNs ahead of time in the book "Society AFTER Doomsday" will be a great asset. One of the reasons for having the meetings is, that in order to remain legal, there are a number of things that the participants must learn, and which we must do with them, directly. It is legal for anyone to own a receive only radio. There are some transmitters, such as CB, or "walkie talkies" that anyone can own. Other equipment is like owning a car, which even a child can do, although they cannot drive it, because they are not licensed. All of our organizational concept is based upon a speculation that at some point there will be great numbers interested in participating. We have no indication as yet that will occur, and are simply moving forward in a task which we hope is the Will of God. If it is not, our lack of success will make no difference, but if it is, we must prepare now because unless we are ready for an influx of interest, there will be no opportunity to service it. SAFE EMS Ham Network is open to ALL Hams With all that I have said about Hams, we are very desirous of having prepper hams join our net. Any ham with a full blown ham rig needs no special equipment, with the possible exception of a locally acquired special $10 antenna, to fully participate. These hams would/will be very important to the core of our Ham Net. Unfortunately, if we, or you, go out to try to recruit other hams who are not preppers, you will most likely find them disruptive to what we are trying to accomplish. SAFE versus Survival Many people who look at SAFE www.webpal.org and who join this newsletter are what are called survivalists or preppers. Survival is a requirement for recovery and reconstruction. What is unique about SAFE is that while it provides what we think is the best plan for survival it also provides a plan for reconstruction. The Five Step SAFE Plan for Survival Our first three recommendations for survival are: Step 1. Get out of the cities NOW! Step 2. Get out of the cities NOW! Step 3. Get out of the cities NOW! Realistically, after telling people this for several decades, we realize that most people are not going to do that. They feel they have to stay with jobs, family, home investments, or whatever. Their alternative plans are: a. Leave when things get worse. When a nuclear event or some such thing occurs overseas, or perhaps earlier when the geopolitical situation gets worse. b. Have a bug out bag and a bug out location ready and get a fast jump on everyone else. Not likely. Even if EMP doesn't shut everything down suddenly and simultaneously it is unlikely that separated family members will be able to reach a distant gathering point. Step 4. The SAFE alternative recommendation, to getting out of the cities, is to plan to shelter in place. Not the best idea, but after decades of telling people to get out of the cities it is recognized as the best that can be hoped for. Survival in the City or Elsewhere The traditional recommendation for survival in the city, or elsewhere, is: "Bible, Bullets, and Biscuits" The Prepper attitude is either: "Me and my trusty gun will defend my family and our preps." or: "We will hide where no one will find us." Fight or flight. The natural animal response to danger. Won't work in this case. In the fights someone will eventually take out the alpha dog and the rest of the pack will be easy. As for flight/hiding, there is nowhere to flee to that you won't eventually be found. "Bible, Bullets, Biscuits." All good but never enough. Bible: No matter how strong your faith in God you will likely come to a place where you need more faith. The true answer in the Bible is sharing and caring. The final Foremost Personage in the Bible laid down His life for others - and that was His advice to all. You are going to die anyway - that is not the issue. The issue is how you live. Bullets: If you have millions of rounds you won't be able to fire them all before one takes you out. Biscuits: The more you store, the more likely a target you will become. If you store any substantial amount, hungry neighbors will come after you. Store enough tons, or hundreds of tons, of food and even any remanents of the government or military will come after you. BBB - Bible, Bullets, Biscuits Bible: If you are not into Bible now, you will be into religion of some kind - because there are no atheists in fox holes. Bullets: If bullets aren't your thing, the need for protection and security will be, no matter if you are physically handicapped, an octogenarian, or some other limitation. Bullets aren't for everyone, but security and protection are. I hope that you are reading SAFE (Safe America For Everyone) for a reason. Biscuits: Food is necessary - but let us be practical - many people cannot store a two year supply. A small fraction of Mormons may, but most don't, and those that do will have the privilege/bounty of sharing it all in the first weeks/months. The Best Plan for Everyone The SAFE Plan has to be suitable for everyone. The protypical individual that would have a difficult time in preparing is TYSMWYC (The Young Single Mother With Young Children) on assistance. Bible, Bullets, Biscuits It will be good if she is big on Bible, but as for bullets, one single bullet and her children will have no protection. In her situation she probably cannot put away very many beans, biscuits or bacon. A plan that will save her - will save you. Step 5. The SAFE Plan is Service Service to God Service to Community Service to Others Some see the above plan as idealistic and unrealistic, but God has told us that this is the only plan that will work, for Him or for us. And the SAFE Plan WILL work. Take this plan for TYSMWYC. We cannot be totally specific but there are solutions. At the time of emergency, in case of fallout, in a highrise she can move to a center floor and interior hallway. In some buildings there may be an underground parking garage. If her apartment is suitable the more she can stay in familiar surroundings, the better. The KEY (above all) is cooperation with others. The more that she can associate with and provide for a group around her, the more that she can/will be provided with defense and safety because that is going to be a mutual need. If she has stored away some bags or buckets of the most basic survival foods such as beans, lentils, rice, grains, then she will have something to share with others, and if she is of service to the community the community will share with her and help her to survive. The key to all this is community and service. The community may be several houses on a street or several floors in a high-rise. Family, members of a church group, or strangers brought together. It may be one or two dozen people, or a couple of hundred. The more service an individual can provide, the more valuable they will be to the community and the more likely to be provided for by community resources for protection and essentials such as food, water, and warmth. What kind of service can TYSMWYC provide? Most important is spiritual strength and leadership. For TYSMWYC, that will sound unbelievable to many, but it is an idea that will be explained in future newsletters. The key to service is preparation. This is where the true Prepper can shine. Knowledge is a great power. Understanding 'what' needs to be done and how to do it is one of the first requirements of leadership. Having copies of "The Paper" which is available as a pdf press master or having read and understood about LERNs ahead of time in the book "Society AFTER Doomsday" will be a great asset. I have explained in previous newsletters how TYSMWYC can provide a great service by being able to provide radiation detection equipment, and understanding of how to use it. But, that is only one example. I will give just a couple more, but everyone's situation is different (remember we are not talking about just TYSMWYC, but also others with very different resources and capabilities). Still, there are many other things she could do also. For example, if she would take some First Aid courses, and really focus on just two or three real skills there - such as how to wrap wounds. It is an amazing skill that many doctors can't do well. Books are available and it just requires a lot of practice on any available subject. Ten types of bandages done fifty times and she would be an expert. She could store great quantities of bandaging material by gathering free suitable salvage material from recyling stores, and then cutting it up, sterilizing it and packaging it. One can improvise and acquire many kinds of materials, such as kinds of tape that will have to make do. Some kinds of salves can be made very inexpensively and some disinfectants can be acquired in bulk very cheaply or almost free in present day society. It is amazing what is thrown out. Someone who has prepared, and knows how to bandage wounds, will be of great value. A next step up would be simple suturing, and above that setting and casting breaks. Medical care of any kind will be highly valued. Having the skills, confidence, and materials will make one completely accepted, no matter that they lack degrees to hang on their walls. A second example was promised - but don't think for a moment that many dozens more couldn't be provided for her. Anyway, here a second example for TYSMWYC. Soup preparation. Knowing a number of emergency soup recipies. Having practiced with them. Acquiring, if possible ahead of time, a large kettle and knowing of some way to heat it. Storing a quantity of bulk spices would really be a hand up. With all that - here is one more that TYSMWYC (or anyone else can do) and that is radio, because that is the particular thing that this series is about. Radiation equipment and radio are two VERY VALUABLE skills that TYSMWYC (and anyone else) can acquire. The SAFE EMS (Emergency Messaging System) ham radio network is going to be so very important because there will be no other way that people will be able to: a. Find out what is going on around them. b. Be able to reach others at a distance to cooperate with them. c. Communicate with members of families from whom they are separated. Anyone who can provide this service will be EXTREMELY valuable to the other members of their surviving community, and their own survival will be assured as much as anyone's. To the chagrin of those wanting the bombing of Syria, Putin intervened. The Million Muslim March mostly made monotonous media memos. I have heard participation numbers as low as 25 but I suspect it was ten times that. The Two Million Biker Rally confrontation wasn't a tenth of its goal size either, maybe a couple of thousand, (or even ten times that) but 20,000 would still be only one percent of two million. Well, any way, more of them showed up than there did of Barry's bombers over Syria and I guess that is what it takes to call it a successful National Patriots Day. I see numerous astute observers stating that the world is in the greatest state of crisis that it has ever been - surpassing even such monumental events as The Cuban Missile Crisis. The Russians and Chinese have drawn a line in the Syrian sand - whether or not Obama has drawn a red line. As dampened down as the situation may appear to become, it remains like an earthquake where the pressures will continue to build along that fault. The triggering factor may come from something else. Iran, Israel, whatever. I think most likely Pakistan/India. Whatever. My guess is in the next nine months. Whenever. The world is indeed pregnant for catastrophe. No matter. To focus upon the interim. The world's economy hangs by a thread. Large riots/demonstrations this week in such diverse places as South America and Poland. The US economy seems bad to some but it is boisterous compared to many places. The US Dollar remains the world reserve currency, but as it goes - so goes the world. It is quite possible the US is about to suffer a financial collapse - far surpassing the Great Depression. Government statistics are very misleading. Intentionally so. The desire is to keep up the public's confidence. For example - this week I read that there were fewer unemployment applications. Consider these four points: 1. Already so many are unemployed or 'discouraged' that there are fewer that can be laid off. 2. The statistics used have been 'shadow' statistics rather than numbers which economists know that reflect the reality - such as percentages within an age group who are employed. 3. There are fewer eligible for unemployment. 4. And here is the kicker - when I read down into the article it stated that three of the main states hadn't reported because 'their computers were down'. Those who write such headlines and stories know that it is all a lie. Their editors and publishers know it also. I honestly do not know what it is that could prompt the members of the media to perpetuate such untruths or to be not willing to disclose truths. At all levels, it may be a desire to retain their jobs and a recognition that most of the public isn't interested in the truth. It may just be market factors and that there is no market for the truth. There is certainly no mass appeal for, or demand for, what I write in this newsletter. Still, in the MSM it is just lying, lying headlines. About everything. No/little mention of the pipeline which is the real cause of conflict in Syria. Nor of the fact that Syria and Iran are trying to shift off US currency, which is what brought down the roof on Kaddafi in Syria and Saddam in Iraq. No transparency. None of us understand what is really going on. Great evils are afoot that those who discuss the Twin Towers at 9/11 and Snowden with the NSA disclosures - will NEVER be able to uncover or disclose. There are other immense problems in America. No mention of the boiling anger among the young black males in America or the pronounced growing racist attitudes in particular segments of the white society. The list is long, but the MSM and the masses remain concerned only about twerking, football season, movies, beauty pagents and current events not much above that level. There is good news too. Fukushima has quieted enough that Japan is to host the 2020 Olympics and North Korea is reopening its joint plants with South Korea. Yesterday's troubling headlines fade to be replaced by new ones, but if we watch the trend in growing militiary armaments and movements, the worsening world economy, increasing number of geopolitical conflicts, increasing environmental and weather extremes, and numerous other situations political, economic and moral, we can see that the world crisis is accelerating. The readers of this newsletter are exceptional in that they are aware and they too must wonder what they can do about it. The answer is nothing. It is the world's destiny. We can only be aware so that we can ameliorate the personal impact as much as possible. The next major event that faces all of us is the Oct 1 US Federal Budget deadline. This is the biggest economic confrontation the US Congress has ever faced because of the size of the US deficit, and the conflict between the US dollar and other emerging world currencies in China, Russia, South America, etc. Because of the failing infrastructure in the US cities, the rapid decline of the productive sector, the immensity of the military budget, and the extreme polarization between those with differing views of solution. Between: Obamacare Sequestration The Debt Limit The intractable sides The Tea Party vs all others there seems to be no solution - in the slide down the slippery slope At the moment, the best the leaders in Congress are hoping for - is a fifteen day extension of the Budget deadline to Oct 15th - (while continuing the Sequestration) and beyond that - the Budget Office says, using every financial shenanigan they can think of, the US will hit the debt limit around the end of October - or the first part of November - no matter if a budget is passed, without raising the debt ceiling. All that I can say to people in financial situations similar to mine - (and a great many are much worse off) is to breathe deeply - focus elsewhere - and wait until this shakes out - because we are all just pushing a heavy load against the unknown and to where we know not. On Tuesday, the Bipartisan Policy Center said the debt ceiling will be hit sometime between October 18 and November 5. Failure to pass a budget has happened only once in US history. Some say twice but I see it all as one. The first shutdown lasted for six days from November 13 to 19, 1995. The second part of it 21 days, from December 16, 1995, to January 6, 1996. I would say to look for a mirror of the same time frames in 2013-2014, but with much more deleterious results - so Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Conditions then were nothing like they are now. The world was at relative peace during the Clinton years and there were budget surpluses rather than deficits. The Republicans hated the Democratic president, and although they tried to impeach him over something about a cigar, their anger toward that president, was nothing compared to the current polarization of the Tea Party and all other factions. You may see it different. But I was a child through the Great Depression, heard on the radio Pearl Harbor and the announcement of the Atomic Bomb, watched men die in the Korean Conflict, held my breath as the Russian ships with missiles approached Cuba, marched in the peace marches and with the NAACP, personally saw curfew and the burning of American cities, and I still tell you - I have never seen the moment of crisis so threatening. But judge for yourself. --------------- At SAFE and Ark Two we are keeping our nose to the grindstone in preparing for what to us seems imminent danger. Since most of the public remains unaware - the task of preparation has very few workers. We need more. Christopher is eagerly looking for active participants to fill state TEAM Leader and assistant TEAM Leader slots. If you are willing to help on that front, please contact him. As the momentum grows it just becomes too much for so few individuals to keep up with it all. We need to split out specified tasks. I very much need the help of someone to keep up the state web pages. If you can do html programming and would be willing to work with the organization for two hours per week - that would be super! I hand coded these pages in html, so it requires someone with an understanding of html to modify them. Let me explain the level of skill needed. If we were to talk on a scale of 1-10 we are saying you need to be a three or four. We are not talking about a genius or maestro. If one of you makes their living in real html coding for web page development you would probably be at least about a 7 or 8, far above what we need, but we would be thrilled if you would do this for us. On the other hand those who build web pages using automatic development systems like Frontpage, Dreamweaver, Bespin, Crimson Editor, Sourceforge, etc. often have only a 1 or 2 level, if that, in understanding of html, and won't be able to do it. ------------- The Radio I have held up putting out this newsletter for a couple of days because I wanted to give an updated radio report. The best answer to the above, is also probably the most disturbing to the general public, namely, who has the best network! That's the SAFE mission. That's the best answer. That's a ratings problem. SAFE Ark Two Newsletter September 8th, 2013 Curious Prophecy Date If I were not so convinced (perhaps wrongly) about my paradigm prophecy that the Great Catastrophe will not happen until after July 28th, 2014, then I might be more excited about this upcoming date that a lot of people are discussing. Mind you, that is not to say that some very significant things may not happen on that date. I just don't think it will be the Last Great Battle of Armageddon. So, anyway, the date in question is September 11th, 2013. Just two days away. There have been some actual official DAILY alerts and strong rumors during the last week. Official DAILY alerts about such things as: 9/2 US Consulate General, Israel warning Americans in country they do not supply gas masks. Recommended contacting Israel Homefront Command or making private purchase. 9/3 Tensions building as Israel & US conduct ballistic missile test in Mediterranean. More US warships arriving on station and in Red Sea. 9/4 Senate panel approves military action in Syria. Next: Full Senate vote. House hearings underway. Arab nations offer to pay for US military action. 9/5 US Consulate, Adana, Turkey orders non-essential staff & family to leave immediately due to security concerns. Urges US citizens to avoid all travel to the country. 9/6 US Embassy Lebanon orders non-essential staff & family to leave immediately due to security concerns. Urges US citizens to avoid all travel to the country. And strong unofficial rumors about the US moving of nuclear weapons into position. This was supported by some very strange official facts that surprised me. Even this week's moon launch was not from Florida, because the US has signed a treaty with Russia that it will not launch Titans from Florida although three other locations are stilled approved. But we won't go there. I don't have today's (Sat 7th) tomorrow's (Sun 8th) and the next day's (Mon 9th) official alerts (I keep telling you I am not a prophet) but here is one for Tuesday the 10th. Obama is planning to speak to the Nation. In fact here is the pre-released speech. I won't be terribly surprised if he departs from that speech - which brings us to the date of September 11th. It may be that Obama has something to say in the way of birthday greetings for Bashar al-Assad, the President of Syria, who was born in Damascus on 11 September 1965 Or it may just be that he wishes to commemorate National Patriots Day (in case you didn't know there was such a day and date passed by Congress) which is on September 11th. Or even Sept 11 - The Million Muslim March as designated by AMPAC (American Muslim Political Action Committee) which has stated: "Every year on September 11th, beginning in 2012, we will be marching in Washington, DC as we build toward our goal of bringing one million American Muslims to march in our nation's capital." Of course it could be commemoration of the fact that on September 11, 2012, the U.S. Diplomatic Mission in Benghazi was attacked by a heavily-armed group of 125-150 gunmen. Hmmm. I don't know. Anything else that you can think of that might somehow be associated with September 11th and prompting the closing of embassies and the moving around of troops and weapons? I am not going into speculations that some have that Yom Kippur 2013 begins in the evening of Friday, September 13 and ends in the evening of Saturday, September 14 and that no one would want any actions or activities to be beginning on those dates because Yom Kippur, also known as Day of Atonement, is the holiest day of the year for the Jewish people. These numbers have nothing to do with the numbers themselves. Only with what people associate in their minds with the numbers. You can't calculate the numbers in a computer to show that one is more significant than another - but you can inquire about what people hold in their minds that might make some date significant. Check out this propaganda There is some heavy propaganda going on out there. Many times I have told you that Selco is one of the most realistic survival information sources that I know of - with the most realistic description of how things will be for you on a local level. I have urged people to take his course and urge you to do so again. And no, I do not get one penny for doing so. Today, Selco publicized this video My comment on his site was: Thank you, Selco, as always your comments are very good. The video itself was a propaganda film for, "Let's bomb Syria!". The motive of those governments who supply the weapons and wish to bomb Syria (as well as those who wish to defend the government of Syria) is the pipeline. No mention is made of that. The words - "We want freedom", is only for their own view. Not freedom for Christians, Buddhists, and Jews. Indeed only freedom for their own Muslim sect. This is true on both sides. On all sides. Because there are many sides. Many there are not revolutionaries. They are terrorists - because they are brought in from the outside. There is no internal solution. There is no external solution. What is required is a change in world attitude. All that happens in Syria will happen to the world - because it is a part of the changing of world attitude. Selco agreed with me that it is a propaganda video and shares another with us there. We are going to hear lots of speeches. Especially by Kerry and McCain. May I share the following with you in order to help you evaluate the value of the advice/information/statesmanship that you get from there. check this sample The Obama Plan It is said that Obama is disappointed in the UN and feels that the US should attack Syria without the UN and Security Council approval. If he does - then that is the final act by which the US will completely destroy the UN just as the US destroyed the League of Nations. This will go well with those who say that the US should get out of the UN and get the UN out of the US. It turns out that on this subject that Obama may be their "Go To" man! Most Americans don't want to strike Syria. Most nations are not a part of 'the willing' to strike Syria. Most people in the world do not want to strike Syria. But, the people who do wish to strike Syria will tell you that it is the moral imperative. Don't think the moral imperative is all about transparency and integrity, because that would involve truth telling, like by John McCain above, or the Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, who outright lied to Congress as was shown by Snowden. I have heard many indignant American's say that Snowden and Manning should have been put to death as traitors to America. Truth telling is obviously not the standard that Obama uses because he subsequently reappointed Clapper as Director of National Intelligence. All this just goes to show how the PTB would feel that I am very unsophisticated about my analysis of the real world. American Patriots judge as confused anyone who thinks that Clapper and McCain should not be highly honored, as they are, for telling lies, while thinking the likes of Snowden and Manning should not be greatly punished, as they are, for telling truths. A Different Subject I have dwelt upon the above subject far too long. It will either make its own news in the coming week, or it won't. Now to something that I know a bit more about. I have been telling you about Shane's new NukAlert. He has put out a poster about it and I am urging him to separate the information about radiation in the poster from the NukAlert itself. I think this would be a very useful poster for all of us to print out. It has been tried in a few places and has greatly improved both safety and the speed with which traffic flows. watch it yourself Traffic lights, like so many things, are the empowerment and embodiment of bureaucracy. Though not mentioned in the video, the one that really bugs me is to come up to a stop light in the middle of the night, when there is not a single soul around, and have to sit there because a camera monitoring the intersection will send you an expensive ticket. I could expand this theme to several other areas, but you have already heard my share of rants for this newsletter. Here at Ark Two This week it has been all about radio, radio, radio. There have been a couple of serious proposals for what we should do now. I hope to work out a few more of the details before passing them on to you and the explanations are so lengthy that I need an issue of the newsletter that is not already so full. We received a lot of good input on eHam, and checking the board right now I see that we had 1889 views - just as we are about to slip off the front page. In closing since we started out about prophecy - so we will end about prophecy. There is an old saying that history doesn't repeat itself - but that it rhymes, so here is a story of prophecy from ancient history. In 580 B.C. Croesus consulted the oracle of Delphi before attacking Persia, (which is the ancient name for Iran) and according to Herodotus was advised, "If you cross the river, a great empire will be destroyed." Believing the response favorable, Croesus attacked, but it was his own empire that ultimately was destroyed by the Persians. Lots to discuss this week. Several members in various states have remarked that their STLs haven't introduced themselves via email. Then I discovered that several STLs haven't received MY emails! A common denominator is that much of this important communication is winding up in the trash as Spam. Many members have suggested that outgoing messages should be titled "SAFE" in the subject box, or something similar. I would add that STLs AND members should check their mailboxes immediately to correct any such problems. Yahoo User Groups or the equivalent bulletin board services are a great idea to allow state members to check what's going on in their state without all the back and forth emails. Another positive alternative would be for some states to create a blog or Webpage to keep in touch with their members. Many sites offer free blog or web page creation (financially supported by ads). Whatever works. I can put you in touch with those who've already done it, if you need guidance. The message here is that each state should be networking, connecting members from within. We also need volunteers to fill STL positions for: Arizona, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin. Contact me, or have your favorite candidate get in touch with me ASAP. This is a natural growing pain - not the fault of anyone. Speaking of volunteers, SAFE desperately needs a Webmaster for our Webpage. Our first priority is to be able to update STL info per each state, plus some other basic functions. If you're interested, and can volunteer the time, please contact me. The new steps we've taken have really worked well for those who have followed through. However, the overhaul to our Database plus other projects kicking will require me to make some personal phone calls to a few STLs to see what I can do to get them to the next level. Best explanation that I have seen and so I am showing the clipping further down in this newsletter. Will Obama bomb or won't he? In the stage vernacular most feel that he already has, but the Nobel Peace Laureate is still pondering Syria. I have absolutely no comprehension as to why. General consensus, of most of the rest of the world at least, is that gas came from the rebels. So Obama will bomb the government Leader (who may not be there) for harming his people. Of course Obama's bombs will/would fall on the people. In this case - children would simply be 'collateral' damage. He wouldn't mean to hit them. Just couldn't miss them. I believe God does lead the actions of leaders, and I have no idea how seriously Obama seeks God, or what answers he is hearing. But, if this is the plan of God, to bomb those who were bombed/gassed, in order to punish those who didn't do the gassing, I have got to tell you - I am confused. Of course, when I look back on history, everything gets turned around in ways that I couldn't imagine at the time. I disputed with my professors that the US could have put US citizens in concentration camps. Of course it turned out it did that to the American Japanese. I didn't believe my next door neighbor's son (who was in Pearl Harbor at the time) when he said that Roosevelt had ordered all the water tight hatches and compartments to be opened on the ships for that morning. But it turned out to be the case. I thought that "The Buck Stops Here" Truman had used the Atomic Bomb to shorten the war, but there is no question now, from the historical record, that he had other motives. So, I had no idea what was going on then - and I am sure I have no idea of what is going on now, or why. It may well be that even Obama doesn't know. I am sure the media 'experts' don't know. The world is now so confusing and confused, it is very possibly no one knows. Not even at the very highest levels. I can tell Obama that the destiny of the world is above his pay grade, but doing what is right and moral is not. Bombing children is not right and moral. The Syria Scene With as little as I understand, the following short letter to the editor newspaper clipping is the best that I have seen. The Big Scene Lots of stuff happening this month. Probably lots more than I am aware of, but here are some things that I am watching. So far - Obama hasn't gotten the green light from Congress to bomb Syria. The troops and ships are all lined up to do the deed as soon as Obama gives them the word. The US Constitution says that only Congress can declare war, but bombing a few people in Syria, or elsewhere, according to Obama, isn't war. I understand this. Way back in the time of Korea, I wasn't in a war. I was in a Police Action. We can also say that those aren't bombs, but that they are just bouquets. Sgt. Shultz and I know nothing. So the G20 Leaders' Summit, scheduled for September 5-6 in Russia, is this week. Obama planning to go, but says that he will stiff Putin. What is especially significant about that is that Vladimir Putin assumed the G20 presidency, December 1, 2012. Obama is stiffing him because of Snowden. He is also stiffing him at the UN about Syria because, theoretically as a permanent member of the Security Council, Russia has veto power over the US bombing Syria. Russia and China won't even discuss it and walked out of a meeting last week when it was brought up. Now one may think Russia doesn't have a lot of options. They can either let it go - or go all out nuke war against the US. But, that isn't so. Russia AND China have another nuke option. The same one that the US used against Cuba (and many other countries). The economic/financial/monetary nuke. They just have to stop taking US currency for their oil. We are not talking about taking US money from the US, we are talking about taking US money from anyone. If that happens it is the end of the US dollar as the world 'reserve' currency. Obama knows this. Obama knows that the Congress may not approve bombing Syria. Obama knows that the Tea Party in Congress plans to bomb him over Obamacare. Obama knows that the budget which should have been passed long ago - may not get passed by Oct 1st. All or none of this stuff may be Obama's fault. There may not be anything that Obama can do about it. Whichever. The next weeks and months should be very interesting - in a Chinese sort of way. That is why we just have to pedal faster in getting ready. I do hope that you will study, and respond to, the National Coordinator's request in his column below. The Radio Scene I am spending many hours each day trying to find a solution to the radio problem. As of the moment that I am writing this there have been 1,135 views of my posting on the Elmer's board at eHam.net There have been some suggestions that Carlton and I are trying to follow up on. We are waiting particularly at this moment for input from Dave. One of the suggestions that we hear repeatedly is that everyone assemble kits. The following is a description of putting together one small component from one of the actual suppliers we have considered. Soldering some parts This Week at Ark Two Have worked on little else all week, other than the radio. We did get a load of wood delivered, and now I need to get it stacked, but will continue to focus on the radio first. Jean and I study for one day each month, in preparation for our upcoming driving exam. The walk-up pregnant cat had four kittens. We had them in the kitchen but Jean let the mother cat slip into another room where she has now hidden the kittens. Life goes on. Who is reading this? No, literally: Who - Is - Reading - This? As SAFE's National Coordinator for the US, I've had the distinct honor to be in contact with a very few, very motivated, very responsible people. Emphasis on the "very few"! Behind the scenes, so to speak, there are some exciting things on the front AND the back burner.  That said, I must come back to our basic purpose of stepping things up to the next level. Several folks have actually emailed me asking how to get in touch with their STL. Let's review. To contact your State Team Leader (STL), go to: http://www.webpal.org/SAFE/aaastateTL.htm   click on your state. That will give you your STL's email. Introduce yourself to whatever level of openness you're comfortable with. If you get no response within 10 days, fire me a quick email, and I will personally  see what can be done to make contact. This is a critical step in our fundamental function as an organization. We need to get beyond that type of question, and on to higher levels of operation - like yesterday! Allow me a quick digression. Each STL was sent their respective state membership list by our Database Mgr. Jonathan.  Names were NOT included. Please forgive me for not making that clear the first time around. The STLs were told to contact their  members with an introductory email, in order to quickly identify who their active members were. Of course, the amount of personal info  shared would be up to the STL and member(first name only, initials, whatever). Results have been marginal. Some states are so far ahead, in terms of creating their own network. It's been an honor working with them! Other states have been run by highly dedicated people with a solid track record, who are now in the rather odd position of somehow resisting to shift gears a bit and adopt some new strategies. That puts me in an awkward situation because we must pick up the pace. And it falls back on me when members start complaining that no one is responding to their offers to volunteer OR inquiries!  Lord knows, SAFE has so many gifted and talented members out there, just waiting to be activated. We can't afford that lack of responsiveness to continue. SAFE is not the emergency broadcast system, just sitting there, waiting for activation. That may have been the case in the past. We have to be functioning NOW. For many, that just means knowing who your fellow members are. For others, that means having  a schedule or means of routinely contacting each other. And for some others, it means coordinating and carrying out independent activities  that are both helpful AND rewarding to your network! So, where does that leave us? Providing information is great BUT, we don't have a monopoly on that. What SAFE does have is a network in some cases, or a potential network in others, that can spell the difference for success or failure in almost any  circumstance. We can't afford to "stick that function in a hole and burry it"! At this point, if this were the military, I'd give an order, but since SAFE is a civilian organization, I have to strongly request that  whoever is reading this, please get off the can, and do what you signed up for. If you're an STL and you haven't answered my  email appeals, get in touch with me ASAP! Give me a list of your priorities, AND a timetable for achieving your objectives!
