Not An April Fool's Joke

Lots of news this week about North Korea and such but I am going to focus one subject. Cyprus on Easter

The lead says "Big depositors at Cyprus' largest bank may be forced to accept losses of up to 60 percent"

But - the numbers in the text add up to 100%
Deposits of more than 100,000 euros ($128,000) at the Bank of Cyprus will lose 37.5 percent in money that will be converted into bank shares, according to a central bank statement. In a second raid on these accounts, depositors also could lose up to 22.5 percent more, depending on what experts determine is needed to prop up the bank's reserves. The experts will have 90 days to figure that out.

The remaining 40 percent of big deposits at the Bank of Cyprus will be "temporarily frozen for liquidity reasons," but continue to accrue existing levels of interest plus another 10 percent, the central bank said.

[So - 37.5 percent plus 22.5 percent more adds up to 60% plus the remaining 40 percent of big deposits adds up to 100% even if they say it is your money but you just can't have it. - Bruce] You can also see the Cyprus story here.

The BIG news for Canadians, although I have not found anywhere else that you can read it, is in
The Canadian 2013 Budget

The Canadian federal budget for fiscal year 2013–2014 was presented to the Canadian House of Commons by Finance Minister Jim Flaherty on 21 March 2013. It was entitled JOBS GROWTH AND LONG-TERM PROSPERITY. On page 29 it talks about the 'successful' renegotiation of the Greek bailout plan and on page 144 under Supporting Jobs and Growth Helping Manufacturers and Businesses Succeed in the Global Economy it discusses how the same plan may be applied to Canada.

Establishing a Risk Management Framework for Domestic Systemically Important Banks

Economic Action Plan 2013 will implement a comprehensive risk management framework for Canada’s systemically important banks.

[The term 'systemically important' is bureaucratese for 'too big to fail' and that term itself is used in the last sentence of the section. The new catch term is also 'bail-in' rather than 'bailout'. Changing the terms makes it all okay. -Bruce]

Canada’s large banks are a source of strength for the Canadian economy. Our large banks have become increasingly successful in international markets, creating jobs at home [Love all the new jobs. - Bruce]. The Government also recognizes the need to manage the risks associated with systemically important banks — those banks whose distress or failure could cause a disruption to the financial system and, in turn, negative impacts on the economy. This requires strong prudential oversight and a robust set of options for resolving these institutions without the use of taxpayer funds, in the unlikely event [Yeah - unlikely event - you can believe that - Bruce] that one becomes non-viable.

The Government intends to implement a comprehensive risk management framework for Canada’s systemically important banks. This framework will be consistent with reforms in other countries [like Cyprus and New Zealand - Bruce] and key international standards, such as the Financial Stability Board’s Key Attributes of Effective Resolution Regimes for Financial Institutions, and will work alongside the existing Canadian regulatory capital regime.

The risk management framework will include the following elements: Systemically important banks will face a higher capital requirement, as determined by the Superintendent of Financial Institution.

    p. 145 of the Budget (page 155 of the pdf)

The Government proposes to implement a 'bail -in' regime for systemically important banks. This regime will be designed to ensure that, in the unlikely (sic) event that a systemically important bank depletes its capital, the bank can be recapitalized and returned to viability through the very rapid conversion of CERTAIN BANK LIABILITIES [Emphasis mine - Bruce] into regulatory capital.

[The bank liabilities are money that it owes to its depositors - in other words the depositors savings and checking accounts - just like in Cyrus and New Zealand - Bruce]

This will reduce risks for taxpayers. The Government will consult stakeholders on how best to implement a bail-in regime in Canada. Implementation timelines will allow for a smooth transition for affected institutions, investors and other market participants.

[Although maybe not so smooth for bank depositors - Bruce]

Systemically important banks will continue to be subject to existing risk management requirements, including enhanced supervision and recovery and resolution plans. This risk management framework will limit the unfair advantage that could be gained by Canada’s systemically important banks through the mistaken belief by investors and other market participants that these institutions are -- too big to fail.

Meanwhile - in the UK
Bank of England - 10 December 2012

(numbered paragraphs in the above document)

    3

across all jurisdictions in which the firm operates. To be successful, such an approach will require close cooperation between home and foreign authorities.

    12

Under the strategies currently being developed by the U.S. and the U.K., the resolution authority could intervene at the top of the group. Culpable senior management of the parent and operating businesses would be removed, and losses would be apportioned to shareholders and unsecured creditors.

[Unsecured creditors is the buzz word for bank depositors, in other words your bank account. - Bruce]

In all likelihood, shareholders would lose all value and unsecured creditors should thus expect that their claims would be written down to reflect any losses that shareholders did not cover. Under both the U.S. and U.K. approaches, legal safeguards ensure that creditors recover no less than they would under insolvency. [Meaning - NOTHING -Bruce]

[While the Bank of England document says that this in the also the US approach, I have not been able to locate any official US Government document that says that it is, so US depositors can be assurred that their money is safe (sarcasm off). - Bruce]

13

An efficient path for returning the sound operations of the G-SIFI to the private sector would be provided by exchanging or converting a sufficient amount of the unsecured debt
[You do surely understand by now that the phrase 'unsecured debt' is code word for saying your bank deposit. - Bruce]

from the original creditors of the failed company into equity. In the U.S., the new equity would become capital in one or more newly formed operating entities. In the U.K., the same approach could be used, or the equity could be used to recapitalize the failing financial company itself — thus, the highest layer of surviving bailed-in creditors would become the owners of the resolved firm.

In either country, the new equity holders would take on the corresponding risk of being -shareholders in a financial institution. Throughout, subsidiaries (domestic and foreign) carrying out critical activities would be kept open and operating, thereby limiting contagion effects. Such a resolution strategy would ensure market discipline and maintain financial stability without cost to taxpayers. [I cannot explain how the Bank of England document can so thoroughly explain about the US policy when I can not find a US source that does. - Bruce]

International Financial World War Three

The intrigues that I am reading and hearing about between the US / Russia / China and others in this International Financial 'cold' World War Three are astounding to me but I won't go into them. In my opinion - these are just the types of things that eventually lead to a 'hot' war.

Readers Comment

    Hi Bruce,

In the latest newsletter you wrote under Radiation Questions "As the man says, "all of the above is above my pay grade", so perhaps better on to something that I understand a bit more about.

I nearly wrote this email a week ago when you referred to readership resignations, but your statement in this newsletter made it a bit easier. I wholeheartedly recommend you do just what you said, concentrate on something that you understand a bit more about. Remove the stuff you don't understand and shorten your newsletter considerably rather than increasing the detail.

I am still a subscriber but I skim read the newsletter now as I inform myself about many of the things you write about from other, more knowledgeable and thorough sources, the gold story being an example which is very old news to me. I don't really need an uninformed weekly digest about this stuff. I look to your newsletter for information about that which you fear the most - nuclear war, the likelihood of same and precautions and actions I can take to protect myself in the event of such a catastrophe; and yet I hardly ever see is information on this.

I feel that if you want to serve the best interests of the subscribers that remain and, perhaps encourage previous subscribers to return, the perhaps your newsletter should provide something along the lines of a cohesively reasoned series of articles joining up the dots that you see leading us to war. Maybe a red-orange-green warning level as things warm up and hopefully, cool down around the world. Other aspects could be those that arise from fallout and the topic about protecting the thyroid is a good example. Permanent links to good sources of information about this is always helpful. I'm sure that if you did this it would generate more questions on that topic in a positive feedback loop that would make your work more meaningful to those that still subscribe.

By all means provide a list of click through links if you absolutely must but spare the commentary because if it isn't informed it isn't worth writing it, and certainly not worth reading (hence the resignations I suspect). It would, I'm sure, make your job and life a lot easier by giving you more time to complete the various aspects of your Ark Two project. It would also bring the newsletter back onto the focus of surviving a nuclear war.

Kind regards Brian

Bruce's Reply-

Well, Brian, as you can see by today's newsletter - I am incorrigible. It may be that some reader's follow all these details in more depth than I do - but I suspect that there are many more who do not.

I do not find the discussion in the general press and when I mention these things to people that I meet casually they appear totally unaware and disinterested.

On the other hand - there are others who agree with you. I received one lengthy email this week blasting the fact that I write from Canada and saying my letter is not suitable for Americans because the things that I write about are not from an American perspective. Strange - because people in Canada complain that I am not a Canadian citizen. So- I please no one.

This week at Ark Two was an exciting and enjoyable week. The weather finally broke and we had the first couple of days of real Spring. In another week the temperature is supposed to go permanently above freezing and the temperature combined with rain should take away the snow and again allow us access to Ark Two.

We had a delghtful dog Easter Egg Hunt on Good Friday and the couple of inches of snow on the ground kept everyone from getting muddy. The next day we attended the regional robotic tournament where Adam's group was competing. Delightful story but I won't include it.

Grandson came to move the wheat, cut firewood, and water the batteries. Earlier in the week I worried the worms, and Fred is talking about coming today to finish the firewood, so I am hoping to get on to new tasks next week.

Peace and love,
Bruce

Watching the Crisis

Which one you may ask? Syria, North Korea, Sequestration - the Budget, Iran, Israeli Rocket, so many - take your pick.

Cyprus

Several people asked me whether I would be getting out a newsletter today and I had to say that I didn't know what to do. For me the 'big' story of the moment is Cyprus which should be climaxing almost any hour - or at least within a day or two.

But - maybe not. Of late all the crises seem to drag on so perhaps I should go ahead and get this out.

The Cyprus situation has been changing from hour to hour. Optimism/pessimism depending upon from whom one gets the last report. Cyprus tries to remain optimistic but there are few others who are.

What it means - I still don't know. Sometimes it is called a "one off' Euro event and other times the beginning of a dominoe effect that will kill the Euro and eventually even the US dollar. On the other hand some have said the US will benefit because the dollar will be the last refuge. With all the talk about the US debt it is about 80% internally held.

Alternatively, the situation is reported as a Russian trap for the IMF and that Ben Bernanke will as result be forced out of the US Federal Reserve. I have no comprehension about these things but you can read about it from this source that was highly recommended to me by a couple of people.

I could provide you with dozens of links about the situation - and while I follow them they are meaningless to report here because they change by the hour and are often contradictory.

Syria
There are many other rumors that I have received in the last few hours. One is about an asassination attempt on Bashar al-Assad. I have been given only one source for that and it is published in Arabic. I have to depend upon the translators interpretation. Supposedly Assad has been shot and is in hospital fighting for his life. The news from there changes by the hour also. First there was the poison gas thing and then Israel launching a rocket into Syria this morning. Just now as I am getting ready to mail this link and also this link just in.

Lebanon
There is much on edge in the whole area. Lebanon's Prime Minister Najib Mikati resigned on Friday effectively dissolving the government and thrusting the country into political uncertainty at a time when the conflict in Syria is sparking sectarian tensions there. The whole issue, concerning Israel, will be where Hezbollah's rocket supply will end up.

Iran
The problems around the world seem to be either money or missiles. I will let North Korea and Iran slide this time regarding missiles but on money - the monetary nuke that Iran was supposed to drop on the 20th (during Obama's trip to Israel) was its oil bourse taking other than US dollars. Again one of those on and off and on things. I don't know how that finally turned out but reportedly that 2008 submarine cable disruption was to stop the launch of Iranian oil bourse.

Saber Rattling
Lots of such cyber warfare reported this week between North Korea and South Korea as well as Russia and China on the US, but I think not much is going to happen Iranwise until after the June 14 presidential election to replace outgoing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Other than that they may get into it over Syria.

The amount of saber rattling saw a major reduction in the last couple of weeks. I think the reason is that Russia and China have given up threatening and that Russia is preparing for possible war (over Syria) and its actions on the dollar (vis-a-vis the IMF and Cyprus) indicate just that. Russia will back Syria and Iran. China will back Iran. Yes, the US will back Israel.

Good as Gold These interplay of forces are worldwide. I wrote recently about Germany trying to repatriate its Gold from the US. Here is a Texas Story that tops that. With gold - if you don't have it in your hand - you don't have it. Given the bank's inclination to fractional reserve banking - they don't have it either.

Radiation Questions
As the man says, "all of the above is above my pay grade", so perhaps better on to something that I understand a bit more about. One reader wrote:
"What does a person who has no thyroid or parathyroids do in the case of radiation exposure to the type of radiation that affects the thyroid? Years ago radiation was given to kids like me, I'm 59, for reoccurring respiratory infections and acne. I had them for respiratory infections and had to have my thyroid and parathyroids removed in 2004 because of those treatments."
and my response:

Never heard or thought of that before - but it seems that you simply wouldn't need to take potassium iodide (KI) - which floods the thyroid - and permits the radioactive iodine isotope to be excreted. Your system would just naturally do that. If you can call that an advantage.

Anyway, this set me to thinking about what things I have learned new, or to be different, from what I was taught in my original courses on radiation fifty years ago, and I am going to list them here.

1. That all radiation is bad for you. Not true.

It turns out that some radiation is good for you. I have given long explanations about this before, especially in response to the 'scare industry' that generated out of Fukushima is the last couple of years. BUT - we are not talking about the levels of radiation that would be generated in a nuclear war. For that shelter is still required.

2. The danger of radiation from nuclear plants being bombed is minimal. Not true - but there is worse.

I have had my thinking flipped back and forth on this several times. First we thought that a nuclear plant being nuked would simply disintegrate the nuclear material and add minimually to what would be the radiation burden from the bomb. You have to understand that much of this type of information was considered 'top secret' back then and we had little to go on - but eventually the consensus became - yes it would add to the radiation burden.

However, not that likely that many nuclear generating plants will be bombed. The greater danger may even be that they won't be - and that the cooling pools will melt down and spread even more intense radiation over a much longer period of time.

3. More recently the great bug-a-boo has been EMP. It is certainly a massive threat but there is one conventional wisdom associated with it that experimental studies show to simply be not true - and that is all automobiles will stop. The engineer who designed the device to measure EMP for US government tests told me years ago that it wasn't true. However, he was my only source, and while I had confidence in that, there was no evidence that I could point people to.

Now, a couple of months ago - I received a pdf of a report given to the US Congress of recent tests, and saw videos of the tests themselves. About 80% of automobiles will not be affected. Of those that are, another 15% will continue to run by simply disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it. The remaining 5% would require more service. I am not saying that all the electronic functions in an automobile will continue to perform - because I don't know (and I doubt it).

4. For years and years I said there was no pill that would protect from radiation (other than KI and that is for the thyroid only) or cure it. Turns out now that Prussian Blue is beneficial and that there are other means of chelation.

However, don't buy into it. They are not effective for intense radiation, are not broadly available, and would be impossible to implement in a gigantic or universal catastrophe.

5. Then some years ago I learned about those radiation eating microbes. Not exactly what I thought at first. They don't destroy the radiation. Nothing but time will do that. What they do is stabilize it into other compounds in the soil so that plants won't take it up. A good thing and we need still more research and plans for implementation of this.

6. Radiation detecting ceased to be such an exact science for me. With very expensive equipment, laboratory conditions and skilled personnel - well yes. But in the field - especially for the layman - no. The instruments are designed upon theory that permits considerable leeway. The instruments themselves, fresh from the factory, have a plus or minus ten percent tolerance, and those in people's hands, that have not been recently calibrated, may be inaccurate one way or the other by 20, 30, or 40 percent. Which may lead one to wonder - why bother? The answer is - the presence and trend are extremely important to know. Is it increasing or decreasing? Use of defense strategies such as shielding and decay time will overcome the inadequacies of measurement.

As a side note I should mention that a properly constructed Kearny Fallout Meter is more accurate than many models fresh from the factory.

7. One major thing that has changed, of course, from my early days, was the idea that the government was going to provide shelters and that there would be civilian teams equipped with radiation detection equipment - and know how. All that is gone - and even back then there was a lot of skepticism about the evacuation routes from the cities. We pretty well know now - that is impossible.

8. Years ago we were all convinced that shelters needed one micron air filtering, and I bought expensive units. Today, I tell people to save their money. A damp sheet will do the job, if even that is necessary. While true that we can't see, feel, hear, touch radiation - we can see and touch fallout. If it is not visible on a clean plate - it probably isn't there. Air itself doesn't become radioactive, the problem is the particles in it.

9. The same applies to water as air. Water doesn't become radioactive. One simply has to get the particles out. Over the years the emphasis has changed from being worried so much about the radioactivity as being worried about having enough air and water.

10. I like to make these "lists of ten" but the biggest change that I have seen in the last fifty years is that the public has divided into two parts. One part over-fears radiation and feels there is no defense - and the greater part is indifferent to the subject.

Reader Commentary
Now, for that first promised reader commentary.
      Hi Bruce,

Just a quick note about Cyprus. I hope NOBODY is troubled by events there. First, their banks have been playing games with the Russian mob, the same way that UBS (Swiss Bank), Bank of England, and others have been the main conduit for laundering drug money from the global cartels! When I recently went to Cyprus to visit friends there, there were three things that really shocked me: a) everybody either produces a huge portion of their own food, or has family that does! b) Practically every home has either solar water heating, solar panels, or both! c) The standard of living is pretty high. Among other things, you could live, sleeping on a park bench, for 10 months out of the year. Obviously, the situation is not good, but don't cry for Cyprus. The people there are quite able to handle much, much, worse; more than likely, they will fare much better than us!

    Christopher
Bruce replies.

Thank you for that insight. Truly the lifestyle of many peoples in many places of the world better prepares them for a crunch/crash/catastrophe.

At Ark Two

Busy week this week coming up. Lots to do with the radio project. Jemma dog to the Easter Egg hunt. JW memorial observation which I have gone to for many years. Big robotics contest in Toronto that I am attending with some of the family. And the glorious problem of having to move a half ton of wheat that is being donated. So many other things also that I can hardly name them.

Anyway - here is the newsletter, although you may think the 'news' all irrelevant by the time that you read it.

Peace and love,
Bruce

Corrections from Last Week:
Supreme Court

Not exactly a correction - but Gary sent me a link to the official US Supreme Court schedule page that showed the birther's petition had been heard in conference as promised - AND REJECTED!
Carriers in Port

The photo was from fifty days earlier - but the story facts were correct because I had gone to "Where Are The Carriers" - for the most current information. The statements about the effects of sequestering were also correctly those of the Navy and Defense Department.

Reader Resignations

There were as usual several reader resignations this week, but I did an unusual thing and asked those that wrote to me - "Why?". Three responded and the answer was enlightening. I am boring. They already knew everything that I write about! Hmmm, thought I. Perhaps I should go into a bit more depth on some things. So, this week you will find three in depth presentations / sources (if you follow the links). I really doubt that everyone knows all these things. Anyway - I will mark them as we come to them - ONE - TWO - THREE.

These are in depth sources, and are not something to be skimmed over. So, if you are not willing to spend the twenty minutes on each of them to really ponder and comprehend them - just skip them.

Syria - My pick as the top news story of the week

I know others would pick the Pakistan scene - but I can't cover everything, and while I admit that is very important - and personally believe that is where everything will eventually all come apart - you have the MSM for what happened there this week - so I am focusing here on Syria which is what is happening right NOW!

The flight of hundreds of UN Disengagement and Observers Force (UNDOF) soldiers - Indian, Austrian and Filipino - in trucks and APCs from the Syrian side of Golan into Israel was in full swing early Monday, March 11. debkafile quotes them as telling Israeli officers manning the Israeli side of the enclave that their commanders urged them to get out when they could because “We can no longer vouch for your safety.” (original in Debka File)

Golan Heights - Border story

I picked this one as number one because it seems the most likely to lead to immediate conflict. The UN, the Russians, Iran, the US, EVERYONE can get involved in this if Israel responds to Islamist launches from that area. The safety zone is gone.
Now for our in depth NUMBER ONE

The original in Guardian UK, and for me it is emotional reading. I haven't published things like this before, but it is what is happening right now in Syria, and it is the world reality that people should be aware that is coming to a town near you.

The Butler Did It (Pope) - Non Transparency

There are many indepth articles that I have read about the Vatican Conclave that is presently ongoing. The big issue / tussle there is between those Cardinals who wish for there to be full disclosure to them about the problems before they select a new pope, and the entrenched Powers That Be (PTB) that wish to retain secrecy 'for the protection of the church'. We all know about the pedophile sex scandals, and that there was some great intrique with the Pope's butler who became a whistle blower.

It is the latter that much of the problem centers around. (Much like wiki leaks). The Pope commissioned an investigation about the Vatican Bank and received an over 300 page report. It is reputedly VERY scandalous and this is what the Cardinals want to see. Well we shall see - but the following is a well documented related story.
Now for our in depth NUMBER TWO

North Korea

An unidentified spokesman for Pyongyang's Foreign Ministry said the North will exercise its right for "a preemptive nuclear attack to destroy the strongholds of the aggressors" because Washington is pushing to start a nuclear war against the North.
Lots of such talk from Iran and others. More and more people are thinking the solution, no matter the problem, is to simply nuke their enemies. Lots of talk in Japan now, about getting nukes. South Korea thinks they need nukes. Everybody wants nukes.
North Korea vows to nuke US

Use of Nukes

The unclassified version of the study by the Defense Science Board also urges the intelligence community to boost its collection on leading nations’ cyber-capabilities and maintain the threat of a nuclear strike as a deterrent to a major cyber attack.
New US proposed use of nukes

Remember Stuxnet? There are reports the next computer worm target could be North Korea’s nuclear program. The US feels that it can use Cyber-warfare anywhere, but if the Chinese, Iran, Russians or someone else does it - then that calls for a nuke?

Harvard Cheating - Non Transparency

The Harvard University administration sent out a memo advising how to prevent star jocks from being dispelled and then tapped faculty emails to find whistle blowers that made the info public. (Again - shades of wiki leaks. It is not what is true that matters, but rather loyalty. (And you can quote Oliver North on that.)

Harvard Values (Original in NY Times)

I think this says much for the where the whole of the American system has gone in banking, Wall Street, government, and yes even in the churches - as noted in the earlier article. The following is a similar story from the military.

Drone Report - Non Transparency

Shades of the novel "1984"! The government/military not only quit putting out the data - they went back and removed it from the pages where it had been previously published. Just change history - if you don't like the way that it was. The "Way Back Machine" still finds the archived pages.

AF removes RPA airstrike number from summary -
(Source: Air Force Times and others)

Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-S.C., told a crowd in South Carolina that strikes by American RPAs have killed 4,700 people.

“Sometimes you hit innocent people, and I hate that, but we’re at war, and we’ve taken out some very senior members of al-Qaida,” Graham was quoted by the Patch website as saying.

Since Barack Obama took office, the aerial assaults also have killed three U.S. citizens, raising additional arguments as to whether the president has the right to order the death of Americans suspected of terrorism without due process of law.

Yep, I too hate that when innocent people get 'accidently' killed. Have to ask yourself how you would feel about that if some other country was accidently killing people or members of your family in the US?

Medicine - Big breakthrough in Medicine

I don't often write about things on this subject - but I was so astounded by this that I have shared it with many members of my family.

I think this has potential and ramifications for all sorts of medical problems.

Big breakthrough in Medicine

Next week - Anticipated Events

Pope

Well, we know that the new pope may be elected before my next newsletter. In the previous newsletter I gave you the Wikipedia link to the Prophecy of the Popes. I found it interesting and I will repeat the link here if you didn't look at it then:
Prophecy of the Popes

Israel Election

(Netanyahu’s deadline for forming a government has been extended to March 16.) Israel had its election, but being a parliamentary system it still has a number of steps to go through to try to establish a functioning government - or it will again in another month have to schedule another election.

Presidents visit to Israel

President Barack Obama will visit Israel later this month, the 20th, even if Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu fails to put together a governing coalition beforehand. "We're going," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said at a briefing for reporters Friday, March 9. In answer to a question, he said, "The formation of the Israeli government is the responsibility of Prime Minister Netanyahu and other senior officials of the Israeli government..." Obama won't speak to the Knesset since the government probably won't have formed.

The biggest scheduled excitement during the time period of Obama's visit is that the Iranian Oil Bourse will begin trading oil in currencies other than the petro dollar (set to begin March 20th). In the financial world this is about the equivalent of a nuke. It is what did in both Saddam Hussein in Iraq and Col. Gaddafi of Libya. This could be just about the biggest news on the horizon - or maybe not. Who knows. All sorts of surprising things can happen (like with the Golan Heights thing).

After Jerusalem, President Obama continues to the Palestinian Authority and then Jordan

Concluding Remarks

YouTube upload

Victoria is having a real struggle uploading the YouTubes for our radiation detection special. But - hopefully one of these weeks. Radio

No good radio news as yet. Shouldn't say that. This morning we finally identified a part that we have been chasing around for many, many months AND the engineer has said that while too busy to work on the project for the next couple of weeks - he will make a full press on it before the end of the month.
And Finally

I certainly don't find the events of the world/times to be boring. I think more happens in a week these days than happened to affect the world in many individual centuries, centuries ago. While I don't expect others to share my world view, the following will give you an opportunity - if you wish to try to do so.

The following is our in depth NUMBER THREE and I don't expect more than a half dozen people to do this one, but it is the one that for me really puts all the happenings of this world into perspective. This is a meditation - and don't even start it if you can't put everything else aside and devote the twenty minutes to it. If you are going to do it, first turn up the speakers and get yourself into the frame of mind to do a meditation - and then start it.

The Fire Tablet - the in depth NUMBER THREE

March 13th, 2013
Pope Petrus Romanus

Well, old Saint Malachy (the first Irish saint to be canonized by Pope Clement III in 1199) nailed it. He said that the present pope would come from a place that was not yet named in Malachy's time and that he would take his name from a famous person that had not yet been born in Malachy's time. Yet he was able to identify him. How great was that!

Malachy (1094 - 2 November 1148) was an Irish saint and Archbishop of Armagh, who had the apocalyptic vision of 112 Popes that we call the Prophecy of the Popes.

The Prophecy stated that there would be 112 Popes (actually 111 with the 112th being the last) and that the last Pope would be Peter the Roman (Peter Romanus).

I know, I know - the Pope has taken the name Pope Francis, but all the names given by Malachy were symbolic codes.

The last ten popes were referred to by him as:
      1. The Burning Fire. PIUS X. 1903-1914.

    2. Religion Laid Waste (Religio Depopulata). BENEDICT XV. 1914-1922.

    3. Unshaken Faith. PIUS XI. 1922-1939.

    4. An Angelic Shepherd. PIUS XII. 1939-1958.

    5. Pastor and Mariner. JOHN XXIII. 1958-1963.

    6. Flower of Flowers. "Flos Florum" PAUL VI. 1963-1978.

    7. Of the Half Moon. "De Medietate Lanae," or "from the half moon" JOHN PAUL I. 1978-1978.

    8. The Labor of the Son. "De Medietate Lunae" JOHN PAUL II. 1978-2005

    9. The Glory of the Olive. Pope Benedict XVI (2005-2013)

    10. Peter Romanus. Pope Francis (2013) Jorge Mario Bergoglio; is the 266th and current pope of the Roman Catholic Church.

To understand the amazing manner in which each of the first nine of the above pope's title is derived you can go to any one of many YouTubes, or Internet web pages, such as: Prophecies about the Popes.
The 112th prophesy states: "In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will reign Petrus Romanus, who will feed his flock amid many tribulations; after which the seven-hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people. The End."
I know, I know, there are endless controversies about the prophecies. Some believe and many don't. They have been attributed to Nostradamus, for example, but I find Malachy's much more compelling than the Nostradamus quatrains. Those too were put in symbolic terms - but then their order was scrambled. The Prophecy of the Popes is in correct numerical order and MOST IMPORTANTLY we have had them for hundreds of years. In fact there are extant printed copies that go back hundreds of years to the time of the printing press.

One of the controversies about the prophecies is that the one's before the time of the first printing appear to be more accurate. Well, duh! At the time of the first printing the editors could see the history and relate to each pope the prophecy given about him. Understanding what was predicted was much more difficult. THAT will be the current controversy.

Given the very accurate description of popes up to 1590 (in the earliest printed manuscripts) and lack of accuracy after that year, Catholic historians generally conclude that the prophecies are a fabrication written shortly before they were published. The Roman Catholic Church also dismisses them as forgery. So you pays your money and you make your choice.

The only way present skeptics would accept the current prophecy is if Malachy had stated:
"The 112th Pope will take the name of a very famous individual who has not been born or named yet but that famous person will be Francesco di Pietro di Bernardone (the Frenchman of Peter of Bernardone)."
Indeed, that very famous individual had not yet been born, (Malchy died in 1148 and Saint Francis of Assisi - the 'Frenchman of Peter' was not born until at least 30 years later) so it is no wonder that Malachy could not provide the exact name of Francesco (or Francis) which derives from the term Frenchman AND it is amazing enough that he could refer to him by his inherited name of the Frenchman of Peter.

The skeptics would also have for the prophecy to be believable to them to continue that:
"The 112th Pope will come from a country which has not been named."
(Argentina was named when its Declaration of Independence was issued by the Congress of Tucumán in 1816. Europeans first arrived in the region with the 1502 voyage of Amerigo Vespucci, long after Malachy's time.)

However, the present Pope from Malachy's perspective would have been a Roman, considering that we are talking about the Holy Roman Church and that Rome is a part of Italy which is the singular place that Malachy could name (as existing in his time) and that it was from where the Pope's father came.

So the Pope is referred to as a Roman after his father's place of birth and Peter after the heritage name of the yet unborn and unnamed famous child (in Malachy's time) that Pope Francis would later choose. Hence, Pope Francis is truly Pope Petrus Romanus.

Now, the Catholic Church has known for centuries about the Prophecy of the Popes, and certainly Pope Francis knew of the prophecy, so Pope Peter Romanus would, as all popes have been cautioned to do, try to select a name that would in no way reflect Malachy's prediction.

But that is the nature of destiny. One can't avoid it. The old saying - "If I knew where I was going to die, I would never go near the place." And the story of the day that Death was walking upon the earth and visited the Court of the King. A servant of the king came to the king and pleaded for a fast horse so that he could flee because of the way that Death had looked upon him.

The king said later to Death, "Why did you frighten my servant in that way?" To which Death replied, "I didn't mean to but I was just surprised to see him here because I have an appointment with him tonight in a distant city."

You just can't avoid fate.

Oh, yes, I do construct elaborate explanations - but if it had been obvious before hand - no one would have permitted Pope Francis to select that name. Whether or not he is the last pope - remains to be seen.

The Catholic Church has a great many prophecies about the time of the end. To mention just two more you might check out the Fatima Prophecies and the prophecy of Pope Pius X.

Anyway, fitting to end one more time with the Prophecy of Malachy:
"In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will reign Petrus Romanus, who will feed his flock amid many tribulations; after which the seven-hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people. The End."

SAFE Ark Two Newsletter
March 6th, 2013

I have dawdled about getting this newsletter out. So much information has come to me this week that I have several times changed my mind about what to write about. I have ended up with a little bit about a lot of different things. I appreciate it greatly that so many of you send me so much insightful information. More than I can possibly share. Hours of videos have been sent to me this week by different people about events in the relatively recent US past.

Excellent documentaries such as showing questions and responses in US Congressional Hearings. Again and again I think to myself, "Oh, how I wish I could get others to view all this." But, no chance. The masses of people out there hold their fixed opinions about the American System, their particular political persuasions, their views of history, their theories of economics and money, etc., etc., and there is no chance of getting them to look/consider anything else so I won't be sending along those subjects.

I will instead just present some very short items of current events that have gotten my attention this week. There are some who will look at the 'facts' / information and interpret them at an extreme in one direction and others who will look at the same facts and interpret them in the extreme opposite direction. So - do with them as you will.

The Dope on the Dow

The Dow this week hit an all time high! One commentator said:
Look, we all know that the Dow, being the only "economic indicator" that Joe Sixpack understands, is manipulated to the point of being meaningless. So according to the Dow, recovery is going ahead full-steam. Good times are here again, so rejoice!
Another commentator stated:
"The stock market is basically back to where it was in 2000, while corporate earnings have doubled since then. Yet the real median wage is now 8 percent below what it was in 2000, and unemployment remains sky-high."
A third source compared when the Dow was previously at this level and now:
      •Dow Jones Industrial Average:

    Then 14164.5;
    Now 14164.5

    •Regular Gas Price:
    Then $2.75;
    Now $3.73

    •GDP Growth:
    Then +2.5%;
    Now +1.6%

    •Americans Unemployed (in Labor Force):
    Then 6.7 million;
    Now 13.2 million

    •Americans On Food Stamps:
    Then 26.9 million;
    Now 47.69 million

    •Size of Fed's Balance Sheet:
    Then $0.89 trillion;
    Now $3.01 trillion

•US Debt as a Percentage of GDP:
    Then ~38%;
    Now 74.2%

    •US Deficit (LTM):
    Then $97 billion;
    Now $975.6 billion

    •Total US Debt Outstanding:
    Then $9.008 trillion;
    Now $16.43 trillion

    •US Household Debt:
    Then $13.5 trillion;
    Now 12.87 trillion

    •Labor Force Participation Rate:
    Then 65.8%;
    Now 63.6%

    •Consumer Confidence:
    Then 99.5;
    Now 69.6

    Then AAA;
    Now AA+

    •VIX:
    Then 17.5%;
    Now 14%

    •10 Year Treasury Yield:
    Then 4.64%;
    Now 1.89%

    •USDJPY:
    Then 117;
    Now 93

    •EURUSD:
    Then 1.4145;
    Now 1.3050

    •Gold:
    Then $748;
    Now $1583

•NYSE Average LTM Volume (per day):
    Then 1.3 billion shares;
    Now 545 million shares
I have given you LOTS of facts there. Up to you to go through each one and think about it for a moment. I could have given you a lot more facts about what is happening in Italy, Greece, France and elsewhere about the Euro. AND about unemployment in those areas. But I don't want to overload you.

One interesting commentator was pointing out that when one person is unemployed it actually (on average) in a society affects three in a household. So that when 25% of a population is unemployed it means 75% of the population of a country are affected. Virtually everyone, or sufficient that it can certainly affect social stability. This may be coming to a country near to you.

Wealth Concentration

The following is a six minute video with charts done by a Harvard Professor. I truly wish people would invest that much time to watch it because while it does not mention them it explains many things such as how the US Congress is controlled, while there is mounting social unrest in the US and why IMO this is one reason there is going to be social collapse.
Wealth Inequality in America

Poop about the Pope

Not much news about the appointing of the Pope. That is sort of amazing with over 4,000 media personnel having been accredited by the Church and checked into the hotels in Rome. It is being called a news blackout. In the previous newsletter I gave you the Wikipedia link to the Prophecy of the Popes. I found it interesting and I will repeat the link here if you didn't look at it then:
Prophecy of the Popes

Yahoo listed seven as being the top contenders.
      7

    Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi
    Country: Italy
    Age: 70
Titles:Cardinal-Deacon of San Giorgio in Velabro, President of the Pontifical Council for Culture

    6
    Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone
    Country: Italy
    Age: 78
Titles: Cardinal-Bishop of Frascati, Cardinal Secretary of State

    4
    Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco
    Country: Italy
    Age: 70
Titles: Cardinal-Priest of Gran Madre di Dio; Archbishop of Genoa

    1
    Cardinal Angelo Scola
    Country: Italy
    Age: 71
Titles: Cardinal-Priest of Santi XII Apostoli; Archbishop of Milan

As you can see - of the top seven names on the Yahoo list for pope
    4 are Italian
    of the other
    2 are black
    1 is a Canadian
There is much speculation - perhaps even hope - that it will be a non-European but I am going with the Prophecy, not that it may not be in some way that I don't comprehend it. The only things of which we can be certain is that he will be:

a man
catholic
over 35(also age requirement for US president)

US Supreme Court Conference

Speaking of news blackouts. Nothing on that Feb. 15th US Supreme Court conferenec when all nine justices of the US Supreme Court were scheduled to gather to review whether Obama used forged government documents and fake identification in order to get elected as commander-in-chief. The actual log entries of the schedule were published - but since then - nada. Some reported controversy that a couple of black law clerks who were responsible for getting the papers into the Justice's folders - didn't do so. Conspiracy abounds. I have no dog in this fight but just one of those many things that I watch - like sink holes.

Where are the Carriers?

Carriers
This picture was taken the February 8th 2013 in Norfolk. The Obama Administration ordered 5 nuclear carriers into harbor. (Sequestration?)

The first time since WWII that five U.S. aircraft carriers were docked together. (You do remember Pearl Harbor?)

The ships in the photo are:
USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69),

USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77),
    USS Enterprise (CVN 65),
USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75),
    USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72)
all in port at Naval Station Norfolk, Va., the world’s largest naval station.
This gives new meaning to the expression - "Where are the carriers".
"When word of a crisis breaks out in Washington, it's no accident that the first question that comes to everyone's lips is: 'Where's the nearest carrier?'"

        President Bill Clinton

      March 12, 1993
      aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt
When asked at a diplomatic dinner party how many carriers the US has
"the answer ranged from 22 to 100. The EU expert weighed in with 40. All were shocked to learn that the United States has a total of just 11 aircraft carriers."
You are looking at five of them in the above picture. The Navy announced in February that in response to Sequestration that it would be docking most of them. Here is their status that I found March 6th, 2013.
Nimitz - Home Port - Everett Washington - decommissioned

Eisenhower - 5th and 6th fleet areas of operation
Vinson - Home Port, San Diego, CA
Roosevelt - Home Port - Norfolk, VA No air wing assigned
Lincoln - Home Port - Norfolk, VA No air wing assigned
Washington - Home Port : Yokosuka, Japan
Stennis - U.S. 5th Fleet Area of Responsibility
    Truman - March 5th, 2013 Departed Norfolk
Reagan - Being refitted in Puget Sound
Bush - Home Port - Norfolk, VA
Ford - To be completed 2015
Kennedy - To be completed 2022
Enterprise - To be completed 2027
For my part it is all irrelevant. From the moment I saw the first Bikini photo I said, "Carriers are now obsolete."

A visitor from China

For me - about as exciting as the visitor last week - from space. Both bode for Great Destruction.
A Chinese general who once threatened to use nuclear weapons against hundreds of U.S. cities will visit the Pentagon this week as part of a U.S.-China military exchange program.

“If the Americans draw their missiles and position [sic]-guided ammunition onto the target zone on China’s territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons,” Zhu told reporters for the Financial Times and the Asian edition of the Wall Street Journal, according to their July 14, 2005, editions.

Zhu’s comments also were the most explicit statement of Chinese strategic intent since 1995 when another general, Xiong Guangkai, implicitly threatened to use nuclear arms against Los Angeles if the United States defended Taiwan in a conflict.

Chinese spokesman later claimed the comments did not reflect official policy.

Zhu was neither reprimanded nor fired after the comments, an indication his remarks reflected official military policy.

Zhu also was never penalized for the comments and in fact was later promoted,

“If the Americans are determined to interfere … we will be determined to respond,” Zhu said.

“We Chinese will prepare ourselves for the destruction of all of the cities east of Xian [in central China]. Of course the Americans will have to be prepared that hundreds … of cities will be destroyed by the Chinese,” he said.

Zhu’s comments called into question the stated Chinese policy of not being the first nation to use nuclear weapons in a conflict. Zhu said the no-first-use policy did not apply to nuclear-armed states. He said the policy was limited to nonnuclear states and could be changed.
[How logical is that? But, I think all the nuclear states have now come to the same announced: "Pre-emptive first use" policy, and I am not even going to get into China's Ghost Cities or Russias gigantic new shelter plan. - Bruce]

The whole story China Visitor story here

Japan / China news

An Asian correspondent tells me:
"The Japanese Premier Shintaro Abe has just compared himself to Margaret Thatcher vis a vis the Falklands as concerns Senkaku."
Fukushima has sort of just faded from the news. There are so many sub-stories here that I could fill the whole newsletter just about this. It is hard to say what is important. Maybe it is all important.

Japanese leaders are talking nukes also.
Taiwan raises its voice about these same islands.
North Korea and Iran are cooperating about nukes -
and both are making threats.
China and India both have nukes and are at odds -
with Pakistan, another nuke state, thrown into the mix.

I know - I know. It is only I who has this perspective of things.

Iran Election

Iran is having a June 14 presidential election to replace outgoing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. How many think this will change Iran's nuke policy? I am sure Obama will say - "We will have to wait and see."

Israel Election / Obama Visit

Israel had its election, but being a parliamentary system it still has a number of steps to go through to try to establish a functioning government - or it will again in another month have to schedule another election. Obama will be there in about two weeks - but won't speak to the Knesset since the government probably won't have formed.

Who knows. All sorts of surprising things can happen.

Syria

All sorts of potential surprises surround Israel. None of them good. Powers are coming to the fore in Egypt that greatly destabilize what has been the situation vis-a-vis Israel for many years. Sunni Egypt (and Saudi Arabia) are supporting the rebels in Syria. Shiite Iran is supporting the Alawite Assad (since they both accept Ali). Assad also has the support of Hezbollah, Russia, China and the Christian community in Syria and Lebanon. The concern is that Assad may do a Hail Mary against Israel. There are so many factors in that scrimmage that no one understands them all.

With all that - the big discussion with Obama during his trip to Israel will be what to do with Iran. Iran with nukes. Iran assisting Assad. Iran supplying missiles to Hezbollah. Iran cooperating with North Korea / Russia / China. Netanyahu wants to play the Iran card. Just look back at that list in the last sentence and say how opposed to that you think Obama/Kerry may be.

Sequestration

The news today is that the budget effects have largely been kicked down the road to September 1st. However, the ships are still in port and a lot of other things are going to get cut back both militarily and domestically.

Chicago Riots

I thought this 3 minute video to be newsworthy.
Chicago Riot
Just fun and games after a concert. Could as well as have been whites in the UK after a soccer game. Not particularly anything to do with race (although there is a lot of anger in all sorts of groups). The thing that impresses me is how wild they can go about nothing. They have warm clothing, warm places to go to, and don't look to be starving. The weather surely cools them down.

Now think about a summer situation with a shortage of food, etc. In my opinion - those times are a-coming.

Feed a Family

Readers tell me that they wish for me to also include solutions. I receive many recommendations each week. However, I thought this one was exceptionally good - so here it is.
Feed a family for $300 a year

Gun sales

The following is just some information that I am reprinting from another source:
The Friday after President Obama's first election was the largest ever day for gun sales. Much the same occurred four years later, when the volume of gun sales crashed the NICS (buyer identification system) twice upon his re-election. The FBI processing of nearly 2.8m background checks made November 2012 – the month of the presidential election – gunsellers' busiest month.

For example, in Kansas City, AR-15s that, a year ago, sold for about $400 have lately been fetching $925, with some assault rifle models selling for $1,500 or more. Large capacity magazines that sold for less than $20 are now fetching $100; in some places, bullets for these weapons are costing as much as $1 apiece. All of this at a time when the economy is bad and people are cutting corners just to get by.

The US has around 4m assault rifles – about 1% of the 310m firearms owned by Americans according to estimates from the FBI. It is critical to understand the symbolic meaning of this weapon in the context of recent skyrocketing sales.
My point of all this is that the US is preparing for a war. I won't call it a civil war. Just social breakdown. It will bring more deaths than the Civil War. The problem is not just in the US - it is world-wide. Social/economic collapse. The solution that will be used by governments everywhere, to retain some sort of control, will be to wag the dog. Won't work this time. The dog now has nuclear teeth. Something is about to start that no one can stop. It will take Divine Intervention because unless those days are shortened - none would survive.

Other News

There is a great amount of 'other' news, such as the expanded use of drones both internationally and domestically. The increasing militarization of the police departments is another item with many supporting stories this week.

BREAKING NEWS: RAND PAUL SAYS THAT HE WILL FILIBUSTER TO PREVENT USE OF DRONES AGAINST AMERICAN CITIZENS IN THE US WITHOUT ACCUSATION, TRIAL OR CONVICTION. (Will this prove to be an important event? I don't know - but I can't wait to find out before I send this newsletter.)
Video Here!

Nuclear news from Russia this week was certainly about equivalent to the China story above, but there has to be a limit about how much I write.

The weather. The sun. The very planet itself. All seems to be in increasing turmoil. However, unless I stop at some point I will never get this newsletter out. My apologies if I have not touched upon what you think was really important this week - but we live in a very active / intense / and collapsing world where I just cannot begin to cover it all.

A Final Word

Victoria is planning a radiation detection newsletter - but it is an exceptionally large task. I think that will be apparent whenever we ever get it out. Also this week was a setback on the radio. The exciter quit working. I am sure this upsets the engineer as much as myself. He did let me come over for a day and wind coils and he says that all those did work.

I will end with my usual plea, that if there is someone who would like to move to Ark Two who could give Jean a hand, we would sure like to hear from you.

Peace and love,
Bruce
